Painting your brick fireplace can be a quick and price friendly way to update your space in a major way. 1) People are big on cleaning a space before they paint it. I would probably only clean the brick if it’s stained with soot in some areas. 2) PRIMING: This is the most important step in the entire process. For a brick fireplace, I’d use KILZ Latex Interior/Exterior Primer, which is a primer, sealer, and stainblocker in one. It’s specially created for sealing porous surfa...ces like brick. Plus it’s highly pigmented, so it works on those yellow brick and dark grout lines. It’s water based, so the clean up is pretty easy. 3) Everyone has their favorite paint, but I’d use Behr Masonry, Stucco and Brick paint in white. If you want a whitewashed look, use a thick, stiff brush and then wipe off until you get the look you want. If you want a full coverage white, you need to use a roller. 4) For painting cabinetry next to your fireplace, I’d use chalk paint. You can buy the expensive brands but I love the Walmart line AND their brushes. Pick the color you want, paint the cabinets. You can then wax it (which seals it), glaze it (you still need to poly on top of the glaze) or simply put a poly topcoat on it. People get fancy with poly, but I’ve always used a clean white sock, put it on my hand and poly’d the item I was painting the way you’d buff a car. 5) Updating the fireplace screen from gold to black is super easy. You’d make sure the glass was covered with butcher paper and your paint tape. Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walmart, and Ace Hardware all have heat resistant specialty paint. It’s the same paint you’d use on your grill or fire pit. It’s a spray paint that’s costs around $15. One can should be more than sufficient to cover a fireplace screen. This is such a great way to update your home, but this is super helpful for the homebuyers that love a home but want it to look updated for their style, for the flippers that want to polish the diamond in the rough, and certainly for the people wanting to sell their home and want to stage it to sell. If you know someone that needs a little help with the Before & After, send them my way. #RealWithReesie

Ooh-La-La! So proud to be able to support the Lafayette House with my time and talent. The furniture pieces were a perfect backdrop to display the purses.

Before and After. This is a project for an event that needed one main piece of furniture the blush pink signature color of the event. I started with the brown coffee table and I added legs to take it from Meh to Yeah!! ... The front had two slider panels but I removed one and placed it on the back of the piece. The result is that now it doesn’t have a back. It can be placed in the center of an area and viewed from all sides. The piece is Champaign Metallic Pink and the handles are copper. This piece isn’t going into a home, it will be used for the event and perhaps future pop up shops so I’m only going to poly the top. Don’t be afraid to paint an accent piece a wild color. When you are ready for a change, you repaint that baby.

Normally, I want to antique wax or glaze everything I paint but I have found this paint a clear winner for projects that I don’t want to antique or wax. My daughter needed a desk and she requested Tiffany box blue and gold. I used three coats with my chalk paint brush and it went on pristine. I lightly distressed (sanded) because the desk is for my 7 year old and I know she will add scratches and dings on her own. I felt I needed to distress in advance so her additions will... add character instead of a frown on my face every time I look at it. If it had been for an adult, I would have left the lines pristine. I added three coats of poly on the top as my kids will set something wet on the surface and leave it there in perpetuity. I put a glove on my hand and then use a clean white sock to dip in my can of poly and then I wipe it on. That always works for me. I buy this brand of paint at Miss Daisy’s Attic. This color is in the kids line, but that is specific for this color. This was a new color for me as I usually buy a white paint in this brand. If you were wanting to paint furniture at home and you weren’t that comfortable with a painting project, this would be the brand I would recommend. Hands down. The staff at Miss Daisy’s are painting experts and would be able to guide you further with expert painting tips.

Before & After. Let’s talk about subtle differences that make a big impact. The before (1 Picture) is a cedar chest I bought years before I had a clue about painting. I rolled on paint like I would have painted a wall, let it dry and placed it in my house. ... Take a look at the top and you can see water marks from drinks placed upon it. The After: I have the advantage of knowing the buyer needs grey/white in the piece, wanted it a tad darker and has children. I lightly sanded the entire piece so the white shows. I no longer had the turquoise color so I streaked whites, gray, a close shade of turquoise. I painted fully on the top to give it depth and to cover water marks. The rest of the piece I swiped with paint where it was needed for character. I glazed the entire thing a very light antique brown and then promptly wiped it off with my sock encased hand. (I love using socks instead of brushes) Lastly I added 3 coats of poly (sock again) on the top as I know her children will place drinks on this thing just like mine did. One good coat of poly on the rest of the piece. The difference is subtle but it makes a impact. It gives the piece depth, character, the ability to fit into more than one color palette. It is sanded and finished in a way that additional dings and scratches will add character instead of ruining the piece. You don’t have to start from scratch with your pieces. Some may just need finishing touches. The inside is untouched cedar, ready to store her treasures.
