Some of our team got together last week to volunteer at Harvesters to package some water for the community. We enjoyed getting to be together and were able to package up 160 boxes of water. Each box has 19 bottles which makes a whopping 3,500 lbs of water!

Our Employee Spotlight for March is Jordan Smith, an Associate Architect with us! Check out what he has learned since being in school and a new hobby he has recently taken up. Q: What is the greatest learning experience you have had outside of school in regards to architecture? J: The best lesson I have learned outside of school that applies every day to the field of architecture is how to create and maintain positive relationships. The power of relationships, both personal... and professional, is immense. Meaningful and direct communication, understanding, listening, and compassion help expedite the design process, welcome new ideas to the table, open doors to new opportunities, and create lifelong bonds within and outside of the office. Q: What are some hobbies you've recently discovered you enjoy? J: I have recently discovered that I really enjoy cooking! I've been learning all sorts of new recipes, skills, and techniques in the kitchen. So far, I have managed to not burn down the house or poison myself, so I suppose it is going alright! Outside of that, I have also picked up sketching again - an old hobby that I lost track of overtime and am getting back into.

Our December Employee Spotlight is Frances! Frances is an Associate Architect. Read below to learn more about her Q: How does your interculturalism influence your design? F: When you are designing on a tropical island, you always need to take the climate and context around your site into consideration and use it to your advantage. This is one of my biggest design principles; simple elements like tall windows, skylights, doors that open to the exterior, can help a space feel... bigger and take advantage of the natural resources. Another thing that I like to do in my projects is incorporate different materials, textures, and colors that can help create visual interest as well as harmony with the environment. Q: We hear you are a big foodie, do you have a favorite cuisine? Any favorite dishes? F: It is so hard to pick one favorite cuisine because I truly enjoy trying new dishes all the time. However, I will say that my top three favorite cuisines are Mexican, Italian, and Puerto Rican. I love how they always incorporate fresh ingredients and a variety of flavors. One of my favorite dishes is arroz mamposteao (rice with bean) with fried pork and mofongo (smash plantains). This is a very common dish in Puerto Rico and every time I visit my family on the island, I need to have it before I return to KC.
