March 2 is National Read Across America Day, a day to celebrate our favorite activity. The day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 19...98 to help get kids excited about reading. Just a reminder, fire alarms and smoke alarms are only part of the solution. You must stay low and go in the event of a fire.

One year ago today, on Feb 23rd 2020, Officer Arthur Brophy was on patrol and came across a structure fire at 511 S. Jackson. Seeing the fire at the front of th...e home, Officer Brophy sprung into action and helped rescue the occupant of the house via the back door. At the same time, ADT had received the alarm signal and were contacting emergency services to get help started their way. Thankfully, no occupants of the home suffered any injuries, the Joplin Fire Department arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze, and the home has underdone an extensive remodel over the last year. Today, Officer Brophy was back on scene, but this time to meet with the family and be present during a special award ceremony. During the event, ADT representatives recognized several individuals from this incident, including Officer Brophy and members of the Joplin Fire Department for their quick response. They also honored Heather Madonna, the ADT representative who was working at the monitoring center and received the alarm alert and got authorities to the scene. As a special surprise, they flew her from New York to Joplin so she could meet the family and emergency workers she summoned that night. During the event, the family also gave praise and thanks to the Joplin Fire and Police Department employees who helped them through this tragic event. At the conclusion of the ceremony, ADT presented the Joplin Police Department and Joplin Fire Department with donations of $5,000 to each agency. We are so grateful for the donation and kind words, but are even more thankful no one was injured during the fire one year ago. We love serving our community and are so proud that our officers and Department can have such a positive impact on people’s lives day in and day out. #JoplinPD #JoplinFire #ADT
Please join us in congratulating 4B Driver/Engineer David Holden for reaching 20 years of service to the citizens of Joplin. D/E Holden we thank you for your dedicated and continued service to the citizens of Joplin.
40% of our fires last year were in vacant structures. Vacant structures create an extremely dangerous environment for your firefighters to work in and increases costs to the community in many ways.
We respond to a lot of fires each year. 2020 was a busy year!
