On July 12th, 2020 two JPAD paramedics, Captain Greg Maguire and Paramedic Erik Bedwell, were involved in a serious ambulance accident. To help Greg and Erik pay for recovery expenses which are not covered by insurance, the employees of JPAD have established the JPAD Paramedic Recovery Fund. The Chief Medical Officer presented to the Board of Directors, recognition of clinical action(s) that resulted in lessening morbidity and/or mortality of a human life. The crew’s performance is not only acknowledged but it is valued by all stake holders of the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District and upholds the mission of the District: To provide prehospital care and transportation for our community with Compassion, Integrity, Respect and Dedication. Recognition is given to... Paramedics Mike Tawfall and Mike Matthews for their professionalism managing a Time Critical Diagnosis stroke patient. On the morning of August 20, 2020 the crew responded to the shoulder of interstate 55 and encountered a 78-year-old male patient who began exhibiting stroke like symptoms while his wife was driving him to his scheduled doctor’s appointment. Initial assessment presented a patient with sudden onset of symptoms associated to moderate stroke assessment score requiring comprehensive neurological services. TCD guidelines were met on all elements of this call resulting in the crew's decision to transport rapidly to provide the patient with advanced stroke care. The patient received tPA [Clot busting medication] for acute cerebral blood clots. Concurrent with tPA, a cerebral angiogram quickly determined a large vessel clot to right main cerebral artery. Patient underwent immediate clot extraction via catheterization and the patient responded with brisk improvement in symptoms with subsequent NIH score decreased from 10 to 1. With no focal deficits and a short stay in SICU, patient was discharged home with slight facial droop but positive quality of life. Neurology from Mercy South reached out with comprehensive patient follow up and a direct statement to the EMS crew. "It was the best decision of the crew to transport to a Level 1 Stroke Center for management of the event. ELVO required not only tPA but immediate radiology and successful thrombectomy intervention, which directly resulted in preservation of focal function." There is a shared pride in the team’s professionalism and advocacy displayed for this patient. Their recognition of a stroke which required more treatment that tPA alone promoted rapid treatment to the appropriate stroke center in under an hour from the first onset of symptoms. Collectively the crew's actions made a difference in morbidity and mortality. The tenure of the Paramedics with Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District: Both Mike Matthews and Mike Tawfall have dedicated service since 2010.
