While walking with Howard this morning I was pondering over my meeting later this morning with a man who calls himself a "holistic attorney". I am looking forward to the discussion. He says he believes in trying to make a divorce a little less painful by considering not just the legal and financial outcome but how a divorce impacts the whole family. I can see myself referring to someone that has that concern. Of course I would rather not refer a couple to a divorce lawyer if ...there is any way to spark that flame again preserve the family unit but if that is the choice or necessity then knowing it may be more of a peaceful negotiation rather than declaring war sits well with me. He wants to meet with me because he wants to know he can refer to a therapist that will help the family to heal from the divorce. I have therapists that can meet with children and adults to help with the divorce transition. We have considered a divorce transition group so perhaps we can get that going. What I would like to do is help a couple to try to communicate what they need to so they can leave ( as much as possible) unresolved issues behind when the final document is signed. One person described her divorce transition as feeling like she was swimming the English Channel between her old life and her new life. So many times she wanted to just turn around and go back but she couldn't. She wanted to swim forward but didn't know what was ahead. I would like to think of Liberty Family Counseling as a place to stop and rest and rejuvenate along the way. A place to catch your breath, get a drink of water and some food in order to feel the strength to just keep swimming. See more
