This shot of @jordanjett (as well as the 1st from a few days ago) was made with just the warm, California sun and an improvised reflector. We had decided to shoot at Paramount Ranch in Malibu, a state park and frequent location for movies and TV. Unfortunately, our schedule didn't allow us to scout beforehand or secure a permit, so I was **literally** only allowed to have a camera in the park. No strobes, no on-camera flash, no reflectors. NOTHING. But we still had some trick...s up our sleeves! The very soft light hitting her face from camera right was created using our other talent that day, Steven. He was wearing a white undershirt, so we took advantage and turned him into a voice activated reflector! We'd simply have him step toward Jordan or away depending on how strong we wanted the light on her face, and we got some amazing images! Sometimes, limitations can help you; you just need to think outside the box.
Wishing I was back in Malibu hangin out on the side of the road with the lovely and charming @jordanjett. Breaking down never looked so good!

Megan Foster, High School Heisman candidate from Waverly, KS. This is the final hero image selected by the client for the write up about Megan before the competition. sadly, Megan did not win the competition, but I'm sure that won't slow her down in the slightest. I love how this portrait turned out. Slightly dramatic, but still capturing a gifted intellectual and athletically talented young woman. For contrast, scroll through to the next image to see my assistant Brandon standing in for Megan on the light test :)
It's a balmy 27 in KC today, and I'm thinking to pre-COVID times when I'd travel to somewhere warm in the early months of the year to shoot new work and get out of the depressing cold. Here's the fabulous @jordanjett taken at the Paramount Ranch in Malibu back when we could travel with such abandon.
Happy #NationalDoctorsDay! I think it goes without saying that a lot of medical professional efforts go largely unsung & that's a shame. When we went through treatment for Jack's leukemia I can't tell you how much we appreciated the doctor's and nurses care and we weren't afraid to let them know. My undying admiration of these people is what initially spawned the series of CMH staff during our stay. To make a long story short, we should try to remember, appreciate and recognize the selfless efforts of healthcare workers not just today, but every day. Some of us wouldn't be here without them!
Another image from a recent shoot with High School Heisman contestant, Megan Foster. I loved the old wooden bleachers so much, I just had to photograph Megan grabbing a little rest in between jump shots. For the final images, the Heisman foundation like to have image that exemplify both the candidate as a student as well as an athlete. In the last post, I photographed Megan in the halls of her highschool, much to the enjoyment of her classmates! Once we had that setup done, it was time to make some dramatic portraits of her regarding her sport of choice, which was basketball. This was a quiet little moment that happened while we were chatting and I just love it.
