I remember being at #WPPI I’m #vegas years ago. I used to go every year. I was having a conversation with a photographer about what is important for me to photograph. Details details details. Emotion emotion emotion! I kept talking about how much I love the details and they were so confused and didn’t understand why they were important. ... I always tell people, if you 1- thought about it, 2- invested into it, or 3- incorporated it at all in your wedding day, then I’m photographing it. People always laugh when I photograph the plated meals or the flat ware. But I know it took a team of dreamers and doers to make every little thing come together for a couple. I’m currently wearing my grandmas (I never met) wedding ring, I held the Bible my mom and her mother carried down the isle, my dress was my grandmas, my head pieces were custom made from a designer friend, our wedding cake topper was the one my parents had on their cake... the list can go on. Maybe you lost someone and that rose and framed photo on their chair represented them being present with you... maybe you surprised your husband with an engraving of the coordinates where you met, on the inside of his ring. Everything matters. It represents who you are, where you’ve been and who molded you. The details might not mean something to some, but to me it’s important. Because it’s a part of your story. It completes the entire connection between you both and your loved ones. Yes they are things. But these things have meaning. So next time you see a photographer photographing forks at a wedding, know a hard working mom who owns a rental company poured her sleepless nights over building her business so she could spend her days with her kids. Those forks matter. Know the history of the hundreds of hands who architected and built the very building you’re hosting your event in, the sweat and tears put into making magical spaces, the light fixtures and the history matters.... and it all matters to both my couples AND the companies who made it happen for them.
