If there’s one book that sums up Jamaa’s Herbal Apothecary, it’s the very profound Working The Roots book by Michelle E Lee. Divided between sections on interviews of healers and their stories and a comprehensive collection of traditional African American medicines, remedies, and the many common ailments they were called upon to cure, Working The Roots is a valuable addition to African American history and American and African folk healing practices. Jamaa Herbal Apot...hecary combines traditional African & African-American medicinal and folklore remedies for healing, well-being and safe passages through pregnancy, birth & postpartum for both mama and baby. Folkloric healing in Black Midwifery was almost wiped out in America when colonization and capitalist tactics attempted to eradicate traditional Midwives & our spiritual practices in the US during the 1920’s. Operating a Black woman-led herbal apothecary in the heart of Ferguson is an ode to our dear Black, Midwife & healer ancestors who passed on with a hope of future generations keeping their rich traditions alive. If you’d like a tour of our herbal apothecary to learn how herbs and traditional remedies can enhance your well being, then book an apothecary session with us on our site. 30-minute sessions are donation based in which you’ll be able to purchase herbal remedies at the time of your tour. Allow us to reintroduce ourselves! We have many new followers and after a pandemic break we’d like to share more about who we are, what we do and how you can be apart of our Herbal Apothecary magic How was Jamaa Herbal Apothecary created? @JamaaBirthVillage founder Tru, who has practiced as a community herbalist since 2009, realized a need to provide expectant families experiencing mild health concerns & families wishing to maintain thriving health, with gentle holistic, he...rbal & nutritional therapy from a cultural perspective rooted right in their community. After a short stay in Ghana, Tru learned many culturally & herbal modalities that could benefit our BIPOC communities across the diaspora. Our Apothecary is: * Accessible * Affordable * Available to everyone Our goal is to authentically re-integrate African & African-American traditional care practices, decolonize our ways of birthing and well-being, to bring about generational health, wellness and longevity from pregnancy & beyond. Traditionally, an Apothecary was the center of every village & community, and provided patients, Midwives & Physicians with herbs, botanicals, oils and medicinals in the olden days. Modernly we have pharmacies which neglect to provide our communities with organic, sustainably grown herbs and supplements that provide cultural healing and remedies for true health & wellness. Our apothecary fills a void that is desperately needed in BIPOC communities. This week we’ll share daily visuals of our Apothecary and how we’re serving the community with this herbal goodness!
