On January 15, 1811, #FortOsage Factor, George Sibley wrote in his journal; A little snow again this morning. Somewhat cloudy. It may be difficult for us to understand what it was like to experience a winter during the early 19th century at Fort Osage. Between 1808 and 1822 the soldiers and civilians that lived and worked at the Fort encountered harsh winter conditions. Besides huddling around a fireplace, one way that people kept warm was by making coats out of blankets. T...he Army issued watch coats for use on guard duty during the winter months. These woolen garments would keep the wind, rain or snow out while being worn. Extra fabric could be used to make caps or gloves. When you visit #FortOsageNationalHistoricLandmark this the winter, you may see one of our military interpreters wearing such a coat. These coats are made from the same hand-woven blankets we sell in our gift store. www.makeyourdayhere.com See more

#foodwaysfriday at #fortosage: This week we are looking at a staple that would have been easy to save for the winter: #beans! We've grown several varieties of beans in the historic #garden just outside the Fort. Like the soldiers of Fort Osage, we left many of the bean pods on the plant, allowing them to dry naturally. Once harvested, they could easily be stored indefinitely. Families would often bring a crock of beans to the local baker on baking day. Once the bread for t...he day had baked, the baker would allow people to place their beans in the wood-fired ovens. The recipes for beans from the period are varied. One staple of most bean recipes was a sweetener, usually either molasses or maple syrup as well as bacon or salt pork, to add flavor and fat to the dish. Visit Fort Osage National Historic Landmark between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. tomorrow/Saturday when our staff prepares beans just as the soldiers and civilians of Fort Osage would have done more than two-hundred years ago! #makeyourdayhere

The last few weeks the interpreters at #FortOsage National Historic Landmark have been talking about how to preserve #fruits, #vegetables and #meats for the long winter. What we haven’t touched on very much, is what you can do with the foods you’ve stored away. One of the easiest foods to store are root vegetables. #Carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips, and potatoes really only need to be stored in a cool dry place to last for months. Even in the dead of winter the residents ...of Fort Osage would have wanted an occasional dessert, and to give themselves a little treat they would likely have turned to the root vegetables they had stored away. #Carrotpudding is one of those surprisingly delicious desserts that can be made from root vegetables. Visit Fort Osage National Historic Landmark between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. today to learn how to make this forgotten dessert and take the recipe home. #makeyourdayhere See more
