From Danny McMurphy..... A reminder that the bears are out of their Winter dens now and looking for food. If you are backpacking then you should know how to han...g your food and other smellables or have a bear proof canister with you to put your food and smellables in at night. A smellable can be many things besides food, including toothpaste, water bottles that have something in them like gator aid, your clothes that you spilled food on, duct tape, trash, etc. Bringing such items into your tent at night can attract not only bears but also racoons, skunks, squirrels, etc. They can easily mess up your tent. The canisters should be placed 100' from your camp at night as the bear or other animal can smell the contents but can't get to it. You can also hang everything in the air suspended from a tree branch. Bear canisters come in several styles. They aren't light but serve the purpose if you want to keep your food safe. If you see a bear then report it online to MDC as soon as you can. A picture always helps if that is possible. A hungry bear will eat whatever it can get so be sure you don't accidently feed them. They can detect the smell of food up to a mile away so keep yourself safe and don't get between a cub(s) and its mother. Make yourself look BIG, hands in the air, and fight back if you get attacked. The Ozarks is a good home to the black bear, see the distribution map, and has many caves for dens. Missouri has over 7,000 caves.
