Coming up on tonight's monthly I.B.M. Variety Talk: A Talk on Re-Enchantment: Bringing the ancient art of Storytelling to Magic, with professional Storyteller and Artificer, Christopher Taylor Tonight, Tuesday April 6, 2021 @ 6:00pm Pacific / 9:00pm Eastern Join in the comments for the the LIVE Q&A at @ibmmagic... Outline of possible topics: Story, storying, storytelling: what are they and what can they do for magic/mentalism? Stop SCRIPTING and start TELLING your stories (hey, storytelling predates the written word! The characters of the Magician and the Teller Transitioning between Teller and Magician Story or Anecdote: Both work, but know the difference Two Modes of Storytelling: Traditional and Contemporary Personal Narrative Story: different rules The traditional approach to learning stories; Learn them by heart, not by rote. Choosing and developing stories An exercise for developing your inner Teller. Four ways of applying story to your mystery routines Believability Touching on Voice The 4-Way Relationship: Magician/Teller/Audience/Story. About the Teller: Christopher’s first magazine article was published at the tender age of 16, for which he was paid the hearty sum of $25. Other articles followed soon after. Much later, he took work as a professional storyteller and educator touring the many Eco-Fairs which were once popular in Canada in the 90s. Christopher’s stories at that time focused on our connections with nature and it was here that he began to employ magic to illustrate the concepts in his stories. That led to a number of storytelling opportunities on CBC radio and, in 1995, to a contract with Crabtree Publishing for a series of five children’s stories. Despite Christopher’s early adventures in storytelling, it was not until he became a classroom teacher that he began to fully appreciate the power of story as a means of connecting and sharing. Once Christopher became a full-time performer and creator of magic, it was only natural that story become his preferred means of sharing magic. A warm up: A preview of Christopher’s award-winning storytelling from his Personal Narrative repertoire: Kung Fu Magic (1st place at the Vancouver Story Slam, January, 2021) theshortstoryshow.transistor.fm/episodes/68
