The Little Dixie Regional Libraries system has begun allowing people to check out mobile Wi-Fi hotspot devices, which allow people to connect to the internet in... areas where they otherwise couldn’t. Portable hotspots allow library cardholders who do not have home internet access to easily get online from almost anywhere using a Wi-Fi-enabled device such as a phone, tablet or laptop. Hotspots are available to check out from all LDRL branches, just like a book or DVD. Borrowing and using the device is free. Each device has a two week check out period and can be renewed if no holds are in place on a device. At this time, LDRL is asking that only one device per family so more households can take advantage of the hotspots. T-Mobile hotspots are filtered in order to comply with CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act). If a device is damaged or lost, a $150 fee will be charged. The internet is fast enough for videostreaming websites like Netflix and for playing online video games, which require relatively faster internet speed than day-to-day uses. Director Grime explained, We are thrilled to be offering mobile internet options to Randolph and Monroe Counties. We have learned the past few months that the internet is a valuable resource and we want to provide equal access to all of our residents. These hotspots can be used for schooling, healthcare needs, work, and so much more. The mission of the library is to help residents learn and to connect to the world. Through these hotspots, we will be able to help our residents connect and grow. Patrons are encouraged to stop in to check out a hotspot. The devices can also be placed on hold through the library's catalog or by calling their local branch. This project was supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. #imls #MissouriStateLibrary #IMLSGrant #2020CARESGrant
