Meet Bertha L. Goodwin. In 1921, our building was home to the Kansas City Social Club. At the time, only men were allowed admission to the club. But Bertha was committed to changing that. She became the first female to apply for admission to the club but her application was put on hold for some later date when the plans for lady members are perfected.... It must have been a difficult planning process because it wasn’t until five years later that Mrs. Marie Schuster finally became the first female member of the club. While we don’t have any photos of Bertha or Marie, we wanted to celebrate their tenacity, bravery and pioneering spirit with a painting that honors their history within our building. To Bertha, Marie and countless women like them that paved the way: thank you.
