Servant Spotlight ~ Karen Orrill on Hospital Volunteering This year marks 25 years of being a volunteer at Liberty Hospital. My first years were spent at the information desk four to five evenings each month and, when I retired, I added evenings and afternoons. Once the Treehouse was completed and opened, I began to spend a couple of mornings there also. While the volunteers are appreciated, I think many of us feel satisfaction with being able to help others. It often pro...vides an opportunity to see someone I wouldn’t otherwise seeor that I haven’t seen in a long time also. Even though I have years of experience doing this, it is surprising how often a new question or issue comes up which can be challenging, but it also keeps it interesting. I’ve had to learn where the various areas and departments are located and it changes more often than one might expect it to. Since I have been doing this for a number of years, I have seen many changes. When I started, only the first part of the hospital was in place. The Doctor’s Building, Medical Plaza East, what is called the south tower and the Treehouse have all been built since then so the facility and grounds have grown considerably. Another change was the addition of the privacy law. Once that went into effect, the amount of information we could provide was reduced. Another change is with wheel chairs. I find they are much more in use than they were 20-25 years ago. Volunteers are currently not being used at the hospital due to the pandemic and I will be glad when we are able to return. When that happens I fully realize there will be changes but I will be ready to go back and adapt as needed.
