Good news! Well, if you are looking for the silver lining. Some have not received their refunds and the IRS site lists the return as... Processing. This could be due to a number of things, but some have been processing since the 1st week of filing. If you had a change, could be any change, divorce, marriage, moved.... your return may have been flagged for an identity verification audit. You should receive a snail mail letter from the IRS. Sorry postal workers. I love you and ...what you do, but our electronic life style has changed your service from the pony express days. The IRS has been the basis for a lot of scams. People are throwing away their letters. Don't! Look the number up to see if it is a real IRS number. Call your tax preparer and have them check it out. They can't do this one your behalf. There is a way to verify online, but some may have to do so by phone. Be prepared for a long phone wait due to reduced IRS employees to answer the phones and process the audits. I've heard they are asking for answers from your tax return back 4 years! Once you have convinced the IRS you are in fact you and you filed this return, it could be 3 weeks before they release your refund... and it will most likely be by check instead of the direct deposit you requested. Update on unemployment. The federal software has been changed to exclude some of the unemployment funds. We are still waiting on guidance for those who have already filed. Still waiting to see what States are going to do.

The IRS has extended tax the tax filing deadline to... May 17th! States may follow, but currently have an April 15th deadline. AR, KS, MO, and OK have not extended yet. It is a great idea to get started as soon as possible. This will allow you to know if you are missing forms or other information. It will also allow you time to gather funds if you owe this year.
