Lucille Grandma Barton Retires In March, the Jackson County Family Court will join in celebrating the amazing dedication of Lucille Barton to the children of ...Jackson County. Barton, 94, retired on February 21, 2020 from the Foster Grandparents Program after 24 years of volunteer service. She spent thousands of hours interacting with children in the waiting room outside the courtrooms at the Family Court. Children and the court staff call her Grandma and she is featured in a video in this link to the Foster Grandparents Program. It's hard seeing these articles in the news... I spent a lot of time at the Jackson County (Missouri) Juvenile Office advocating for parents' rights to be terminated so their kids could be adopted into safe and loving homes. You never expect abuse/neglect to be exchanged for further abuse/neglect. Obviously, this case doesn't represent the thousands of other adoptions that don't result in further harm to children, but it is the result you always fear when doing your job.

They are the ones out there investigating the 60,000 reports made each year through the state’s child abuse and neglect hotline. They are also handling the cases involving the roughly 13,700 foster kids in the state’s care. So much responsibility, yet so little appreciation. Thank you to all the social workers out there who put their lives at risk to help these kids.
