We have experienced this a couple times in the last 6-7 years and there is a good chance it is about to happen again. Snow and ice remain exposed on the roof ...while underneath your house and attic are warming the bottom side of the ice causing it to melt and turn into water. As this water accumulates it starts traveling uphill and goes behind the shingles causing water to come into your attic and house. This usually happens along your gutter line, very low pitch roofs, valleys that run into walls, and other areas where snow and ice collect. In northern states code requires the use of an ice and water shield in those areas to prevent against ice dams. Until southern state/county codes adopt what northern states require this will be an issue for our homes when we get ice and snow with extreme cold temperatures for long periods of time.
