How often do you drink tea? In American culture, coffee reigns king, and tea seems almost an afterthought. In Nepal and Africa though, our colleagues would tell you that tea is part of their everyday life! Tea is a drink offered to welcome guests, a way to start the day, and a staple "food" for many people. When Dr. Sherri Kirkpatrick made her first trips to Asia and Africa, it was nearly impossible to convince people that tea did NOT count as a food. Since then, research ha...s uncovered the many benefits of tea as a holistic agent. Unsurprisingly, tea has remained a staple that our colleagues can use to increase antioxidants, soothe common ailments, or comfort others. It's an important part of both areas' agriculture as well. Lush, green fields create a stark contrast against the red soil in Africa, and Nepal has a government sector dedicated to their tea exports. Much of the tea that's consumed in the United States was grown in Asia and Africa. Today, we invite you to pour a cup of tea and consider a small piece of the culture that's shaped some of our dear friends! *Pictured: Man harvesting tea, women welcoming guests in Biratnagar, Nepal.

Our nursing scholars are uplifting lives! Yesterday was International Day of Women and Girls in Science! This week we have been highlighting several recipients of our nursing scholarship this year, recognizing their study of health sciences and service to improve the health of people in their communities. I decided to train as a nurse because of my experience from my immediate environment, my community which is actually flooded with alot of helmets (diseases) and the prese...nce of many vulnerable people who sometimes do not get utmost attention and support due to their social and economical status. I thought my training will enable me to provide a service to all these people and possibly volunteer to those who are in my reach. Furthermore, I am interested in engaging myself in community health groups such as the Kafwa helping the women cleaning wounds of clients with no relatives. -Karen Mulubwa, Zambia Fun fact: Karen was one of our amazing teachers at Mapalo Young Peacemakers School and she loved teaching. She struggled to decide whether to pursue nursing or teaching and finally followed her heart to nursing. Karen has long watched her mother, Grace, a Kafwa community health worker leader, tending and supporting the health needs of community members in Mapalo. Based on her experience in her community, and watching the Kafwa, her heart was led to pursue nursing and we know her compassion and skilled care will impact many lives! Our nursing scholars are uplifting lives! Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science! This week we have been highlighting several recipients of our nursing scholarship this year, recognizing their study of health sciences and service to improve the health of people in their communities. When I was young, I have spent my whole childhood in the hospital. The person whom I had staying with was a kidney patient. So, I frequently visit hospital more than school. Fr...om those days, I have always been fascinated by their work and dedication towards the patient. For me studying nursing and getting certificate is not enough. I want to help the people who are far away from the health services and health care facilities and those who need hand in their difficult situation. Nowadays, studying nursing is very much expensive, specially for me who don’t have father and mother is next to impossible. I am getting this opportunity to fulfill my dream - Pabitra Bhusal -Kathmandu, Nepal Orphaned at a young age, Pabitra had little to no possibilities for education or advancement. But health worker coordinator, Pinkey Malla, and her family opened their hearts and home to Pabitra and she is family now. Through their love, doors of opportunity have been opened to Pabitra, and she takes nothing for granted. This year, Pabitra is in her 2nd year of nursing school thanks to the nursing scholarship awarded through HealthEd Connect. Through the generosity of donors like you, we are able to make dreams come true and uplift aspiring nurses as they become licensed professionals! Young women like Pabitra will make an impact in their communities, save lives, and inspire others to follow seemingly impossible dreams. You can help make dreams come true for other aspiring nursing students! Our nursing scholars are uplifting lives! Tomorrow is International Day of Women and Girls in Science! This week we are highlighting several recipients of our nursing scholarship this year, recognizing their study of health sciences and service to improve the health of people in their communities. Firstly, after successful completion of my studies I want to be a liable midwife that will be fit academically, physically, emotionally as well as spiritually so as to provide rec...ommended quality care to people in different parts of the world. Secondly, I also want to be a midwife that will have impact across the world in helping pregnant women both young and old by providing information on ways to improving their nutrition, women empowerment and entrepreneurship. Thirdly, I want to be a responsible and a professional midwife that will work in partnership with women to provide necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and delivery and postpartum period. Lastly, I want to be a young role model to girls in my country and my existence should imitate that everything is possible with hard work and belief. Being a role model will help other young girls to live with integrity, optimisms, hope and determination that they can also make it in life. - Vinjeru Banda - Mzuzu, Malawi These were some of the inspiring statements shared by Vinjeru Banda in her nursing scholarship application about why she wanted to become a nurse. You can feel the sincerity of her desire to empower women, especially mothers, to be healthy and well. Did you know that nurses consistently rate as the most honest and ethical professionals in the U.S. (Gallup)? Globally, nurses rank in the top ten of most-respected professions (Varkey Foundation). We trust nurses with our lives and loved ones. We are thrilled to be assisting brilliant women like Vinjeru as they join those respected ranks and inspire other young women to do the same! After her mother’s passing, Nikita has been uplifted and mentored by her aunt, Sangeeta, a professional nurse (also as a recipient of this nursing scholarship) who is one of our volunteer community health workers. Nikita has assisted Sangeeta in health awareness trainings she conducts in communities around Biratnagar, Nepal. Nikita and Sangeeta are both great examples of women who have taken their desire to serve their community in a meaningful way and added skills and training to provide the best care possible.
