For most of us, Halloween looks a lot different this year Trunk or Treats and Trick or Treating might be a thing of the past, at least temporarily. This is all the more reason to take a trip down memory lane with us as we reminisce on HDIS Halloweens of the past!

The Olivette Fire Department has been readily available to us since we first moved into the neighborhood back in 1994. As we moved into our first real building (1215 Dielman Industrial Courtright behind the upper east parking lot), we inadvertently introduced ourselves when we set off the alarms. From day one, the Olivette firefighters were there in minutes for every callwhether it was a real emergency or an accidental 911-dial (I won't name any names, you know who you are...). They provided swift help and comfort during the May 2019 fire that started in our lower level fulfillment center. Within a couple of minutes of the alarm sounding, they were there putting water on the flames. Because of their quick action, no one was hurt and we only lost a few pallets of products. So, when they needed our help for a change, we were quick to respond. Quinton Hildebrandt, one of the firefighters, was on a recent call for a life-long Olivette resident. The 77-year-old woman lived on her own with significant health issues that made her very weak and unable to walk long distances. Unfortunately, about three weeks ago she had a fall from her wheelchair. When the firefighters helped her transition from the floor back to her wheelchair, they found that the wheel lock no longer worked and the wheel was bent making it unable to move while she was sitting in it. She told us that her insurance would not pay for a new one, and asked if they knew anyone who could help. Quinton knew just who to call! After Jen Jones heard the story, she immediately reached out to Stephanie Foote to source a chair, and Erin Zimmerman who heads up HDIS' Charitable Contributions Committee. Jen said, "We get requests to donate on occasion but most of the time, it's from organizations and you don't know who the actual recipient will be. When Quinton reached out to me for help with a local resident, it hit home. We could help someone here in our own city and be able to share in the joy it will bring. Knowing that she has what she needs to live her life is what gave me all the warm and fuzzies." The fire department picked up the chair and delivered it to her last week. Quinton said, "Thank you once again for this wonderful donation. My fellow firefighters and I are beyond excited that you guys were able to help us make this happen!"

As we know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many of us may be attached to someone who has been afflicted with the disease or we may have even been afflicted ourselves. To recognize this month’s Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, below are some facts from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-cancer-awarenes) that you may or may not be aware of: 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her... lifetime Although it occurs only rarely, men do get breast cancer. In 2020, an estimated 2,620 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 20% of them will succumb to the disease Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women besides skin cancers. It is estimated that this year, about 30% of all new women cancer diagnoses will be breast cancer There are over 3.5 million breast cancer #survivors in the United States *cue Destiny’s Child’s Survivor* It’s important to know that this disease can be survived but early detection is the key. Pay attention to your bodies, get your annual exams and share encouraging words to the breast cancer survivors in your life this month.
