As little Jude is demonstrating for us, start this habit young! It makes the routine of it, and the feel of the brush in their little mouths, easier. Read the information below for guidelines on when and how to start brushing that very important first set of teeth! Many parents have a tough time judging how much dental care their kids need. They know they want to prevent cavities, but they don't always know the best way to do so. Here are some tips and guidelines. When Should... Kids Start Brushing Their Teeth? Good dental care begins before a baby's first tooth appears. Just because you can't see the teeth doesn't mean they aren't there. Teeth actually begin to form in the second trimester of pregnancy. At birth, your baby has 20 primary teeth, some of which are fully developed in the jaw. Here's when and how to care for those little choppers: Even before your baby starts teething, run a clean, damp washcloth over the gums to clear away harmful bacteria. When your baby gets teeth, brush them with an infant toothbrush. Use water and a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). Use fluoride toothpaste that carries the American Dental Association's (ADA) seal of acceptance. (If you are using baby toothpaste without the fluoride, keep it to the same amount because you still want to minimize any toothpaste that is swallowed.) When two of your baby's teeth touch, you can begin flossing between them. Around age 2, your child should learn to spit while brushing. Avoid giving your child water to swish and spit because this can make swallowing toothpaste more likely. Kids ages 3 and up should use only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Always supervise kids younger than 8 while brushing, as they're likely to swallow toothpaste. Even babies can get tooth decay. Putting a baby to sleep with a bottle can harm a baby's teeth. Sugars from juice, formula, or milk that stay on a baby's teeth for hours can eat away at the enamel (the layer of the tooth that protects against tooth decay). This can lead to "bottle mouth" or "baby bottle tooth decay." When this happens, the front teeth can get discolored, pocked, and pitted. Cavities might form and, in severe cases, the decayed teeth might need to be pulled. When kids are 6 months old, they can switch from a bottle to a sippy cup (with a straw or hard spout). This helps prevent liquid from pooling around a child's teeth. By their first birthday, they'll have the motor skills and coordination to use the cup on their own.

Last week's Christmas crew is this week's Kicking out 2020 crew! We are thankful that in these last 2 weeks of this unique year of 2020, we have been able to serve many new, and existing, loyal patients. With everything from that checkup they were hoping to get done on holiday break, to that tooth that was "assaulted" by a jaw-breaker, to that toothache that flares up inevitably over a holiday, we are happy to be available to you. Thanks so much for making 2020 a year to re...member here, from the "emergency" days in March and April (those were rough, right?), to the going back to "normal" in May, to the many genuine conversations we have had with so many of you this year, we say, "Cheers, and here's to an awesome, blessed 2021!" From your Happy Rock Dental family

This is something that can cause: Pain, tooth fracture, headache, and temporomandibular disorders (TMJ Syndrome): muscle problems of the jaw and joints that can inhibit chewing, cause a "clicking" noise, and restrict range of motion. No good! Let us try to help you with this issue.
Tommy's smile transformation is one of our favorites. We just finished and got final photos this week. This was an #ABAOrtho case. Aligners for the bulk, Brackets for the Bite, and Aligners for the finish. He just wishes more people could see him without his because he's loving to smile
NEVER FORGET: On this day back in 1941, 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 wounded in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It has been a difficult and stress-filled year for all, but today is a good day to realize that our country, our people, have been through many hardships that were life-altering, and earth-shattering. Keep hope.
We have a coveted checkup reservation available this coming Saturday at 9:00! If this is something that sounds like a good idea for you, please contact us via text (if you are an established patient) or phone call. It won't last!
Happy Rock Dental will be closed starting at 1:00 PM on Wed, 11/25/20, through Sun, 11/29/20, in observance of Thanksgiving Day. In case of emergency, please call the office phone. You may leave a message, which will be checked when we return to the office, or if you have a true emergency, and are currently a patient of record, you may contact a dentist at the emergency number on the voicemail message.
Happy Fall! What's your favorite thing about this time of year?
We are open for all procedures, with protocols for cleaner air, increased staff PPE, and reduced patient to patient and staff to patient touchpoints. Reach out to us and get back in the dental groove! Or if we've seen you, and you are needing treatment done, we can help you check that off the to-do list. Give us a call. Shianne or Debbie are happy to help you with that!
We ought to give thanks for all fortune: if it is good, because it is good; if bad, because it works in us patience, humility, contempt of this world and the hope of our eternal country. C. S. Lewis We are sooo thankful for our awesome family of dental patients!
Keeping it positive!
According to the weather forecast, you can cook out and catch some rays today, and by the weekend, galoshes and a coat will be in order. Sounds like Missouri! Go, Chiefs!
Dr. Jenisch becomes Mrs. Perriman next week! If you would like, leave your wedding wishes below. We are so happy for her!
Since we are still abiding by Clay County's mandatory mask order, we thought our patients may benefit from their recommended guidelines for the types of masks that are best, and those that may not be for use outside of the dental/medical industry.
Soldiers have been held up has heroes as long as man has been at war. From biblical warriors to Greek gods and goddesses of war, there is no shortage of honor bestowed on those who vow to raise their swords against their enemies. So how did Nov. 11 become the one day of each year designated to appreciate the brave men and women across all wars who answered the call to serve? The simple answer is World War I. The Great War, as it was previously called, ended at the 11th hour o...n the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Veterans Day began under President Woodrow Wilson as Armistice Day one year later, on the first anniversary of the end of World War I, Nov. 11, 1919. In his proclamation, Wilson stated, ...reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations... This, however, was not a uniquely American holiday. Countries like Belgium, Canada, England and France used the date to honor their veterans as well. France to this day calls Nov. 11 Armistice Day. Canada designated the date as Remembrance Day, and Great Britain calls the second Sunday of each November by the same moniker. Congress amended legislation to change the name to Veterans Day in June 1954. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it and issued a proclamation that October acknowledging that the United States had been engaged in two wars since Armistice Day was first observed. In 1968, Veterans Day was designated a Monday holiday under the Uniform Holiday Bill, which was intended to create a series of three-day weekends. This decision was met with dismay and in 1975, President Gerald Ford made the move to have Veterans Day permanently held on Nov. 11, as the date maintains historical and sentimental significance for the American people See more
