Makerspace Update (2/27/21): Let me begin by saying THANK YOU to all of our members who kept their memberships current during this past year even when we had to temporarily close for a few months due to the pandemic. As we see more of you starting to come back in to use the workshop for the first time since we re-opened a few months ago, we wanted to get you updated on how we are doing things as we wait just a little bit longer to get back to 100% normal again... Workshop Ent...ry: The current (temporary) members enterance is located at the garage door in the gated parking lot behind the building. To enter, please push the button next to the garage door. There is a "badge-in" reader just inside the door once you have entered. We have blocked access to the classroom area at this time, but you can just ask us to retrieve your project box from there if/when you need it in the workshop area. Classes: All of our classes to the public have been put on hold until further notice. However, if you are a member of the space, we are still providing the usual training and guidance as needed. Makerpace Tours: Our weekly open house events have also been put on hold until further notice, but you can still call us to schedule a one-on-one tour of our facility on a day/time that fits your schedule. Storage: If you have cancelled your membership, please be sure to come pick up your belongings from our facility asap. We still have a lot of items that need to be picked up, many of which have been here for several months after cancellation. We have been very patient, but at this point (many months later), we may be forced to make some hard decisions for you to create space for other members. With so many makerspaces across the nation having to close their doors forever during this pandemic, we feel extremely blessed to be able to keep our doors open as best we can (all thanks to the support from our amazing maker community). We have missed the way things were around here since the pandemic, but we are hopeful that we will get there again in the near future. In the meantime, wear a mask, practice social distancing, get the vaccine when it becomes available to you, and make all the things in 2021. We love our makers! -The Dalton Family
Be sure to tune in this Thursday!
We had solar panels installed at our makerspace about a year ago, and they are working great. We just hope that the power stays on so our makerspace chickens stay warm enough in their (now heated) coop tonight.
While cleaning out the basement in our first (shotgun style) house in the west plaza of KCMO (4544 Terrace St) we discovered a stack of Valentine's Day and other greeting cards from the 1930s & 1940s hidden in the ceiling. They were in perfect condition with brightly colored illustrations & the popular slang of the time, and included hand written letters from the person who sent them, professing their love for the person who received them. We came to the conclusion (after reading them in order and noting the subtle wording) that it was a "forbidden love" between two women. As much as we wanted to take them with us, we decided to leave them with the house when we eventually sold it because it felt like the right thing to do. I think about those cards and their back story every year around Valentine's Day and always will.
If you love NAKA-KON as much as we do, and have perfected your DIY face mask game, here's your chance to share your creativity with your Naka family... (virtually of course).
A wonderful example of people giving back to their community.
HammerSpace owner Dave Dalton finished off the family chicken coop with just the "Wright" sign. Made in the makerspace using the large CNC router.
Update on the story about the distillers who made emergency hand sanitizer and received hefty fees for doing so.

HammerSpace Workshop will be CLOSED FOR THANKSGIVING, Thursday, Nov. 26th. We will be open to current members only on Friday, Nov. 27th. Then it's business as usual again beginning Saturday, Nov. 28th. We wish everyone a safe & relaxing Thanksgiving holiday. We sure are going to miss our makerspace's "Friendsgiving" tradition this year. Stupid pandemic. (Photo credit: Matt Bell)
And just like that, we became the *custom RPG miniature* printing factory in Kansas City.
HammerSpace Workshop's very own Dave Dalton has an article on casting Beskar ingots in this month's print issue of MAKE Magazine. Please think about subscribing to Make: Magazine if you want to support this important resource for makers everywhere.
Behold! The one Thanksgiving decoration at our makerspace. A plaque made by one of our members for our patio bench. If you get the reference, you might be old... I mean, uh... cool. #alicesrestaurant
Here's a helpful holiday guide from the brilliant makers of Open Source Medical Supplies (AKA the group that organized makers of all ages & backgrounds to start making face masks, face shields, and other medical equipment for their communities when it was so desperately needed in the beginning of the pandemic). Please share this guide with your loved ones to help keep them safe during pandemic winter.

Shop local and buy from your favorite makers and artists this holiday season. It will help so many creative people during this pandemic which has taken a huge toll on those who have lost income due to the cancellations of conventions, festivals, and arts & crafts shows. We need to support and encourage peoples creativity now more than ever.
