For the past 12 years, Greenwood Laboratory School Elementary teachers and students have held a food drive in November and December. The items are donated to the Ozarks Food Harvest. This service project has expanded to accept cash donations. This year 545 pounds of food and $1610 in cash and online donations were collected. One dollar donated the Ozarks Food Harvest can provide 5 meals to families in need. This year the National Honor society asked to participate during the December drive, making the project a kindergarten through twelfth grade collaborative service project for Greenwood. A big thank you goes to everyone who has donated food or money to the Ozarks Food Harvest during this time of even greater need in our community.
Greenwood 1st and 8th grade students collected presents and wrapped them for students at the Greene Valley State School. Greene Valley is located on Pythian Street behind Evangel College and has approximately 60+ children who all have significant disabilities and special needs. The children range in ages from 5 to 21 years old. All are referred from public schools in Springfield and the surrounding areas and are funded by State Board of Education. Breakfast is also being donated for the staff of the school. These pictures are some of the presents and the wrapping that was done this week. Thanks to the Clark family for organizing this every year and Dr. Hammerschmidt for involving her 1st graders and classroom.

Greenwood science teacher, Sara Hallgren, had her 5th grade class make virtual dioramas. This year to include the virtual students we made our dioramas digital. They worked on a new platform (SketchUp) for a month to demonstrate their knowledge of the four spheres (biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere) as well as putting a food web together. THEN we put their projects into virtual reality (with the help of a 5th grade parents, Mr. Beach). Below you can click the link and view it on your phone or computer without a VR viewer. Just move your phone around as the video changes views to see the whole diorama or click the arrows if you are using your computer. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/Y4GzEqPPhUo

This weekend, Greenwood's Scholar Bowl team competed in the Kickapoo Classic. There were 36 teams and ours consisted of Fiona Wu and Joshua Cox (normally teams compete with 4 people at a time). They had a winning record of 5/4 and did a great job overall. Thanks to Coach Jennifer Grace, who coached our team and also helped monitor rooms with other schools during the online tournament.
Greenwood Speech and Debate Season Opening Success Greenwood Speech and Debate has competed in two tournaments so far this season and we are very proud of their success. These tournaments have been online due to COVID-19 so a brand new world of speech & debate competition. Greenwood students have been fantastic at navigating the transition. Kickapoo was the first tournament of the year for Greenwood. Dorian Khoshoymn and Zachary Wehrenberg earned 4th place in the Cham...p division of Policy Debate. Dorian also advanced to the top 12 (semifinals) in International Extemporaneous Speaking. Lisa Carpenter advanced to the top 12 in Informative Speaking. There were approximately 40 total high schools from throughout Missouri competing in the tournament. The very next weekend, the team competed again at the Willard Invitational tournament. Dorian/Zachary were 3rd place in Champ Policy Debate and Lisa Carpenter/Samiha Khan were 10th in Champ Policy Debate. Additionally, Jamie Alford and Eleanor Hilton advanced to the final four of Varsity Policy Debate. The debaters earned key victories over Pembroke Hill, Glendale, Parkview, and Jefferson City. Several other Greenwood students turned in strong performances as well - other students competing included Abigail Cox, Andrew Wilslef, Logan Huyck, Taylor Wehrenberg and Pearl Evans.

Thanks Booster Club for sharing this great news! Congrats to our Soccer Jays for their 7-2 record and being ranked 6th in Missouri Class 2. Our Soccer Jays had to move up into the next class because we are a non-public school and we have successful Final 4 appearances over the last few years. Blue Jay Pride

At the History Museum on the Square we are all about education and providing new learning experiences. HMS partners with Greenwood Lab School annually to offer ...middle school students volunteer opportunities. This morning Grant and Caden worked 3 hours moving historical photo canvases from the Fox Theatre into storage at the new museum and cleaned all the windows and dusted & vacuumed the HMS Education Center. They are acquiring hours for the Civitas Discendo honor, part of Greenwood's Public Affairs curriculum. Great job, boys! We look forward to working with more of your classmates in the weeks and months to come.
