LEADERSHIP LESSON -- None of us would admit to liking boundaries. I have a friend who has a dog that was a mess from day one. The dog would run off any chance she got so they kept in a fenced area of the lot, instead of her enjoying the families four-acre lot. She only got to come out when she was leashed. The family finally put in an underground fence and had the dog trained within a few hours. She can now run free in the yard, and the family sees so much more of her because... the dog can just hang with them outdoors. The dog finally understands her boundaries and with that understanding, came so much more freedom. Boundaries actually give us freedom. It’s contradictory but true. Sometimes boundaries exist for our own safety and so we can enjoy more freedom. It allows us to live our best lives. Boundaries are not for the sake of oppression, but for a life full of joy. What is Community Green Dot? Community Green Dot is a prevention program that seeks to reduce power based personal violence (child abuse, stalking, dating, domestic, and sexual violence) and is predicated on the notion that all community members have a role in reducing violence. If you would be interested in scheduling a training please contact your local MU Extension Field Specialist in Human Development and Family Science. #ExtendMU #Committed2MOFamilies

LEADERSHIP LESSON - What do you do when you try to energize a community around an idea and few people seem interested? For starters, spend no time worrying about people who do not like your idea. Chances are they were never going to help. But you can win them over (which is different than convincing them). It's not your job to change the way anyone else thinks. Your job is to take action and make it so attractive that others want to join. It is also essential to make it easy ...for them to join in. Then keep doing it. Build a sizeable and committed-enough community to move forward, and you will bring those dragging their feet or stuck in the past along with you. Eventually, a few of them will see the merit in what you are doing and become supporters. Most importantly, do not let the people who are not helping stop you from taking action. It's easy to get discouraged when others are not with you. Unfortunately, that often causes individuals to get stuck instead of pushing on!
