Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.

Mr. David Gray, Jr., owner of Gray Construction, presented to North Wood 8th Grade JAG students this morning. He explained that the influence of technology and ...gaming has resulted in fewer skilled laborers entering the workforce. As a result, the construction industry, an ever-expanding field with many opportunities, is seeing a skilled worker shortage. And, by the way, kids, you NEED algebra! Mr. Gray explained that algebra teaches us how to think and that we use algebra in daily life. He demonstrated to students how he uses algebra when bidding jobs, squaring buildings, figuring roof pitch, and calculating the percentage of grade fall. He stressed the value of creative thinking and of collaborative work, two keys to help ensure success. Regarding the financial and compliance aspects of being a business owner, Mr Gray detailed terms such as overhead, liability insurance, workers’ compensation, taxable income, employee tax, and deductions, licensing, sub contractors, and supply and demand. Students were impressed with all the construction projects his company has completed at North Wood and the surrounding areas! Mr. Gray said one of the most rewarding parts of his chosen career is seeing his finished products and knowing he has helped people. Mr. Gray also emphasized the importance of education beyond high school, and of continuing education related to one’s field. He explained that a factor in being able to be successful is the ability to present ourselves well, and that we learn how to do this in school. Mr. Gray closed his presentation by stressing the importance of work ethic and perseverance. Thank you, Mr. Gray! Amanda David Gray
