The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Justice Center has been honored by the The American Institute of Architects as a 2021 National Architecture Award winner. This project, and its project team, is celebrated for focusing on the community’s views of just use of the land, allowing exploration of Western court design goals and Indigenous sustainable systems. Congratulations to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the entire design team. Read more about the award and the project here: https://bit.ly/3xxDpjv. // Images: Hélène Binet

A unique hybrid of museum and student commons, the The University of Kansas DeBruce Center creates a permanent home for James Naismith’s The Original 13 Rules of Basket Ball (1891). An aluminum-clad bridge enshrines the two-page document and seamlessly connects the modern addition to the historic Allen Fieldhouse. Excerpts from the contemporary rules of basketball are engraved in the aluminum plate, wrapping the 451-word historical document in the more than 45,000 words that define the game today. #marchmadness

Our in-house branding studio Canary Studio teamed up with Oakland artist Jet Martinez to create this jewel-toned botanical mural for the centralized community space at San Francisco State University Manzanita Square. His bold, graphic imagery complements the interior theme of the projectdesigned to bring a balance of city and nature. The space is located at ground level and includes a game room, coffee/kombucha bar, and the Academic Success Center.

The State of California is committed to 100% clean energy by 2045. Pushing toward this decarbonization goal, the San Francisco State University Manzanita Square project is one of the first all-electrical buildings for the CSU system. Not only does this super-insulated project offer healthy, comfortable, and energy efficient student housing, but it also adapted well to Covid precautionsthe HVAC system is designed to allow each unit to safely intake 100% outside air. Thanks to our partner American Campus Communities.

The lights are oninside and outat 30 Otis. The project adds more than 400 units of housing to support the City of San Francisco’s vision for a new pedestrian-friendly neighborhood in The Hub, a transit-rich area in close proximity to downtown. The building also provides a new home for the area’s beloved City Ballet School. Thanks to our partners @turner_california + @alignrealestate.

Pop, color, and surrealism brighten up the outside of our San Francisco studio on Brady Street. A collaboration with local artist Elliot C. Nathan, the half-city-block mural is a playful mix of familiar iconography and hopeful messaging, all floating in a technicolor dreamland. Special thank you to our partners Double-D Engineering, Badiner Urban Planning, and the San Francisco Housing Action Coalition.

ON GOULD EVANS BLOG: https://blog.gouldevans.com/not-all-trees-are-created-equal/ The presence (or absence) of a tree can substantially impact the economics, social health, and land property values of a community. And, not all trees are created equala native approach to regional landscape design not only instills a sense of place, it creates an environment where native species quietly work in an interconnected way to support the health of our neighborhoods. ... The world is changing, pedagogy is changingand education spaces are evolving. The new @wccusd Michelle Obama School is designed to support @cast_udl framework, which breaks down barriers in learning while supporting the creativity of educators. The school embodies pedagogical progress and equitable values by understanding that each childand classwill learn differently. The design team created flexible spaces that pull-away walls between classrooms and age groups, allowing educators to build community learning into the future. And learning suites support differentiated learning, rather than a one-size-fits all model. The program embraces a makers ethos with a garden, library, maker spaces, outdoor learning environments, and hands-on digital learning to prepare students for our rapidly changing world.

Teaching is inherently a political act. To support students on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic, early education administrations need to think about how the classroomcan be an incubator for change and social justice.
