Alright friends... The time has finally come for me to share Delilah Joan Coltrain's birth story. I tried to type this out yesterday and wound up shutting the computer and walking away. The tricky thing about trauma is the reaction to trauma is different at times, from anxiety to depression. ***Trigger warning: this story does contain graphic details*** Welp, that being said, let’s get to it. ...Continue reading

From an outside point of view this photo appears to be a beautiful moment where a mother meets her baby, and believe me it was a magical event no doubt. This photo for me captures so many emotions including being scared out of my wits and traumatized after having my sweet bundle babe ripped from my body after a very long and hard induction. Delilah's birth story is not beautiful in many ways, but the love that grew from that experience is a constant inspiration in my life. He...r birth story has led me on my journey here with you all, baking up Milkmade goods, and hopefully normalizing conversation around pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I will share our entire birth story tomorrow for anyone interested* Let's back track a bit, I will admit I was incredibly unprepared for my first birth. I read books and had been around plenty of babies in my life, but I felt distant from the reality of what was really happening- a baby would be born and shoot, I would be the one pushing. Oy! We went through a very popular hospital with a large staff in their maternity ward. I had not done any research on where to have a baby, admittedly it never crossed my mind. Where I grew up you went to the hospital close to you and that was all she wrote. I was young, immature, and honestly so overwhelmed. I did not realize the options that lay ahead of me. I was such a "yes" girl that I yessed myself right into years of struggle, in myself, my relationship with my daughter and my marriage after the traumatic experience we had at this large hospital. Lets just get down and dirty and talk about the knitty gritty bits about motherhood that no one wants to mention. Not every bit of motherhood is as Pinterest depicts. More than ever its important to be informed and feel comfortable with the decisions you make, including your provider, midwife, doula, etc. Knowledge is power when it comes to pregnancy and motherhood. This is not me on a soap box exclaiming you should be out there reading all the books. Knowledge is so much more than what you can find in a book. Community and sisterhood can lead you down a whole new worm hole of advice and support. My hope in sharing this post is to inspire mothers to explore their options. Consider what you want your birth experience to be. It is true that birth plans often go out the window, but acknowledging and honoring your birth experience wishes will help you get into a healthy and open mindset.
