Payton represented USA women's basketball in 2019 at the Americas Tournament on the U16 team, where they won the gold medal, and has been selected as an all-state volleyball and basketball player. When it came time to again represent the USA in the international U17 tournament in Romania this summer, she had that opportunity dashed due to the coronavirus. But, that hasn't stopped her from continuing to train and share her expertise. Many of Payton's younger teammates and their parents have expressed how attentive she is in helping and how, despite all she has had to miss already, she is always a positive presence. After 20 years, Natalie helped lead her soccer team to their first state tournament appearance in 20 years. The next year, she lost her entire soccer season due to coronavirus. Despite that, she still showed up to and helped lead the conditioning program though none of the players were actually allowed to even handle a ball. Natalie has shown that through dedication and perseverance it is possible to excel in the classroom and multiple sports all while creating a positive environment. Naji has worked meticulously to up his club ranking and finally landed a spot as the starting goal keeper on his team. He also works to help support his single mother. A class 2 state champion hoping to return to the big show, Marco never lets his success overshadow where he came from. To this day, Marco continues to help with the community park he has used his entire life at 9th and Van Brunt on Kansas City's east side by volunteering his time and picking up. He knows that sport is a way to bring together and better any community and has seen firsthand the good it does for people in his own neighborhood. Marco is a #GoodSportKC. While color guard competitions and a performance in London have been put on hold or cancelled due to the coronavirus, Maddie has continued to practice year-round. Color guard is not a "typical" sport, but Maddie knows that many atypical sports are just as difficult as their more traditional counterparts. Unlike many other sports that are more seasonal, color guard practices and competes all year. However, this year, many of their contests were cancelled. After winning two com...petitions in a row and heading into regionals with a full head of steam, the regional competition in Springfield was cancelled. Maddie and her team were also slated to perform at the 2020/2021 New Year's Day parade in London, England only to have that trip cancelled as well. Despite all that, Maddie has continued to lead as a team captain and perfect their routines and her role in them. Kali wants all the girls out there who are interested in "boy's" sports to know they can give it their best and compete. Growing up in wrestling, Kali did not have many girls to compete against. But, competing against boys gave her a new level of confidence when she faced girls. That challenge and confidence has propelled her to many wins on the mat, including winning a district title and advancing to the state tournament. Joshua had a traumatic brain injury due to an accident and was told he may never play the sport he loved ever again. When we started this competition, we could have never predicted just how impactful the stories you all shared with us would be. We are proud to have a platform and an incredible partner in Matt Besler who helped us select these honorees. The pandemic has affected us all, but one group it has had a particularly great effect on is high sc...hool athletes.
