From all of us at GFD,

Glasgow Fire District 16.11.2020

Every 4th Monday of the month, GFD holds an administrative meeting among members to discuss department business. This month, Beckett’s Restaurant of Glasgow honored our firefighters with a delicious supper. Beckett’s owner Nikki Gouge reached out wanting to do something nice for our responders after an extremely busy month of emergency calls. The timing could not have been better since we celebrated Jeff Docc Olendorff’s last meeting as an active member of our department. Docc spent 44 years on the department and was involved with many of our advancements in service capabilities. Thank Nikki and all of the employees of Beckett’s, and Docc for your decades of commitment!

It is time to turn back your clocks. That means it is time to change the batteries and test your smoke alarms. Please don’t take this small chore lightly. A fire in the home can happen in the blink of an eye. The occupants of this home owe their lives to working smoke alarms. You and your family are worth it! Hear the beep where you sleep.

Recently GFD added hose bed covers to Engine 5 and Tanker 1. Firefighter Josh DeMint worked to install them during his off hours. These covers will protect our hoses from the elements, keep off the dust from gravel roads, and to keep the the hose from blowing off at highway speeds. Thank you Josh for installing and D&S Custom Covers for designing and fabricating these covers in such a timely manner.

This afternoon GFD was dispatched to a structure fire inside Glasgow. Fayette Fire was dispatched as automatic aid and provided manpower as RIT crews for our interior firefighters. Upon arrival of Engine 5, smoke was visible from the eves and attic gables and filling the living areas. The officer and firefighter of Engine 5 flaked out the preconnected 1.75 attack line and established a water supply from the hydrant in front of the residence. Rescue 2 arrived on scene from w...hich firefighters with a thermal imaging camera entered the structure with the charged attack line. They began looking for the source of the smoke and closed any open windows to prevent multiple flow paths that may endanger those working inside. A smoke curtain was deployed at the front door preventing unwanted air entrainment. Engine 6 dropped supply line at the next closest hydrant laying hose to the fire scene. Tanker 1 stayed at the second hydrant to tandem pump if necessary. Crews found smoke coming from the furnace and isolated the fire there. Members pulled ceiling to check for extension, vented smoke, and cleared the scene after making sure there were no further threats of reignition. GFD would like to thank the Fayette Fire Dept, Glasgow PD, Howard County Ambulance, and Howard Central Dispatch for their continued assistance and tremendous work as always. See more

After a busy couple of weeks at our department, the Stienmetz 4-H youth organization put together after call snacks for our members. Our firefighters could not have been happier when they were greeted with treats as they returned to the station this morning from a structure fire. Thank you Stienmetz 4-H for your thoughtful gifts!

This morning at approximately 8 am GFD was dispatched along with Howard County Station 1 as automatic aid to an unoccupied mobile home at the very southern edge of our district. Late detection in conjunction with distance from both stations rendered the structure a total loss upon arrival. Members remained on scene for several hours for overhaul. GFD would like to thank Howard County Station 1, Howard County Ambulance Dist, and Howard Central Dispatch for all their hard work at this scene.

As of 5:30 pm GFD has run another 3 fire calls and 1 medical emergency. Just before dawn units were dispatched to a tree on fire near the Doxie Creek bridge on Highway 5. The tree had fallen on a power line causing several citizens in Glasgow to lose power. Later in the afternoon firefighters responded to a bean field on fire west of town off of Highway 240. Shortly after returning all apparatus and equipment back into service members were dispatched to another bean field on fire north of town near Highway KK. GFD has run a normal month’s worth of emergencies over the last 6 days.

Our neighbors have a lot of things going on this weekend. Go see our automatic aid partners in Armstrong at their 3rd annual Harvest Festival with activities, a corn hole tournament, and a gun raffle. If you enjoy car shows go see our friends at Howard County Station 2 in New Franklin. There will be food and drinks available. Good times provided by good people for a good cause.
