I spent the years between 8 and 11 working as hard as a child can to become good enough for God. In my childish mind I believed if I just worked harder, I could become better and better and maybe become good enough for God's love so he wouldn't send me to hell. I suppose it was because I learned to love God so young that it is an innate part of who I am that I never considered giving up on pleasing him.
