Tax Tip Tuesday! Many taxpayers still don't know about the simplified method for home office expenses. Instead of keeping records for utilities, repairs, insurance, etc. taxpayers can simply use $5/sq. ft. (for up to 300 sq. ft.) in order to calculate their home office deduction. You still must have an area of your home that you use regularly and exclusively for business, but the simplified method can significantly reduce the recordkeeping burden that discourages some taxpayers from taking advantage of the deduction. Our very first Tax Tip Tuesday! The IRS has recently begun sending out 2014 tax notices. As most folks who have received an IRS notice know, they usually don’t show up for over a year after the return was actually filed, making it very difficult to understand and sort out. Notices can happen for a variety of reasons and can range from a typo to not receiving a 1099 that was reported to the IRS. Most taxpayers don’t realize when they receive these notices that each income i...tem affects several other items on a return and the IRS’s calculations aren’t always the most reliable. For instance, the computer generated notices don’t always take into account the special treatment for qualified dividends and capital gains tax. On one such notice, we calculated a difference in the proposed balance due of over $14K! We are happy to announce that Jake Beasley, CPA has joined the staff of Gibson & Company, PC as a tax manager. Jake is a Centralia, MO native and a 2011 graduate of Westminster College in Fulton, MO. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Columbia Tiger Quarterback Club. Jake focuses on tax preparation, small business financial statement compilation preparation and Quick Books setup and consultation.

We are pleased to announce that Gibson & Company PC has completed the acquisition of Landers & Co, LLC. During the past ten months, the staff of Landers & Co, LLC has done an excellent job of continuing after the unexpected passing of their founder. Due to Missouri State Board of Accountancy regulations, the Landers & Co, LLC name had to be changed. During this past spring, LW & Company, LLC helped manage Landers & Co, LLC. Due to their out-of-state ownership and lack of... familiarity with Columbia and Boone County, a change was needed. Therefore, Gibson & Company PC acquired the company in order to continue to provide your accounting and tax service needs. Many times when changes like this occur, clients express the following concerns: Will my relationship with the firm change? Will the partner I have been dealing with still be there? Will my fees increase? Will the staff I am used to dealing with and procedures I am accustomed to working with remain the same? Will the firm's location still be convenient? In hoping to relieve any anxiety regarding the change, Gibson & Company PC has no plans of moving, eliminating staff or changing the current fee structure. Our contact information remains the same with only a different name. In fact, our intentions are to hire additional professional staff and increase the knowledge base to offer you an even wider range of exceptional service.
