Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! As Jimmy says, THANK YOU to our 1,600+ teachers! You're the BEST!
Mrs. Aviles had at least 3 children come through Gateway Middle. Her daugher, Rachael, who appears near the end of this interview, still graces the 8th grade hallway in a picture.

The District is closed next week for Thanksgiving break. To help limit spread in our community, the week following Thanksgiving (Nov. 30 Dec. 4, 2020), Distr...ict schools will remain closed to students (staff may still work out of the buildings), and all instruction will be virtual. Students currently enrolled in in-person instruction will return to their schools on Monday, Dec. 7, 2020. Are you getting District updates by email? If not, visit www.slps.org/districtdigest to subscribe.
Some of my students see ‘Dr.’ in front of my name and assume I don’t understand what they’re dealing with. The reality is that I came from the same neighborhood..., and graduated from this same school. School saved my life. But I didn’t always want to be a teacher, education found me. I started as a substitute teacher in St. Louis Public Schools because I needed a job that would provide for myself and my young daughter. I learned quickly that I loved inspiring and educating young people, and just six years later I became a principal. As a relentless leader I try to model lifelong learning for both students and teachers. My goal is to inspire them to remove masks of insecurity and self-doubt, and I do that first by bringing my full self and story to my job. I didn’t always know how to do that, but learning from my mistakes has made me a more empathetic and compassionate educator. Oprah Winfrey once talked about passion, saying that it’s the thing you would do for FREE. For me, that’s serving the young people in SLPS. The work of educating children is everyone’s business. It is ‘HEARTWORK’. Today, I’m encouraging others to lead with resilience and authenticity. We should always be thinking, Who’s next? they’re tomorrow’s leaders. #OurCityOurSchools Kacy Shahid Saint Louis Public Schools
All District schools and offices will be closed tomorrow, Nov. 11, 2020, for Veteran's Day.
Custodians are our first line of defense of the war on germs and it can be a thankless task. So we wanted to show our appreciation to the awesome custodians who clean our schools and offices! #OurCityOurSchools
It only takes a few minutes to complete the census. Visit https://my2020census.gov/ because your community is counting on you. Why is it important? Hundreds of ...billions of dollars are at stake! The results of the 2020 Census will help decide where federal funding flows. If you aren't counted, St. Louis could miss out on government grants that will support education, provide housing assistance, improve highway planning and more. See more
