Two weeks ago I had the great pleasure of doing a studio visit at @kcaifiber with @katefromm. Kate is our May exhibiting artist. RSVP to her opening reception here: https://fb.me/e/7zU16qW6L We have had the privilege of partnering with KCAI Fiber since 2015 to exhibit the work of one of their graduating seniors. We are passionate about supporting emerging artists at our gallery and it is really special to us to get to work with students at this exciting time in their degr...ee. Kate’s work is made with her own take on the traditional Japanese practice of Shibori dyeing. These gorgeous silk panels blur the boundaries between fiber work and painting. Watching Kate work was truly watching a beautiful dance between artist and material. Some of the results of these complex, multi-layered works are meticulously made by Kate’s choices, other marks are made more by chance, and ultimately she chooses which marks to embrace. One of our core values as a gallery is to press into generative conversation in our community and world. In 2016, we partnered with a variety of organizations and its neighbors to bring attention to the devastating global reality of human trafficking. In ‘Faces of Freedom,’ visual artists, photographers, poets, musicians, dancers, among others united to champion the humanity and dignity of those men and women who have been sold and abandoned in modern-day slavery. As we move into our new location at 208 W 19th St, we are looking back on some of our favorite exhibits from the past seven years at 1708 Baltimore Ave.

Over the years, we’ve been honored to host several traveling exhibits from @christiansinvisualarts . In 2018, we hosted First Fruits. This is one of our favorite works from the exhibit: Eucharist by Van Mourick We are looking back over exhibit highlights from the past seven years as we prepare to host our first show in our brand new space.

These lovely works from Caroline Colby-Gonzalez’s show, Known, Knowing, and Unknown from 2018 also won first prize at our juried exhibit Madonna/Madonna in 2016. Caroline was a leader in our gallery as a resident with @transform_arts and has contributed so much to our community! Today she is the Director of the Culture House School of Art in Kansas City in addition to pursuing her art practice. We are looking back over the last seven years in our 1708 Baltimore space as we prepare to move into the new gallery. Check out our profile to see more beautiful works from the last seven years.

In 2018, the fabulous @ollijolie curated a show of work inspired by the history and complex beauty of Hip Hop: What you see is not a test. This gorgeous work was painted by Evan Jackson @hevanpaints , who is primarily a street artist, but this was one of his first oil paintings. Thanks for your gorgeous work, Evan! And thanks to Olli for curating such beautiful exhibits. We have been lucky to have you working in our space!

In ‘Banal Magic, exhibited in 2017, artist and curator Caroline Colby-Gonzalez brought together an exhibition featuring Latin American artists. This exhibition featured the work of artists who reflect on their lived experiences through paint, ink, bronze, and dust, engaging truths about themselves and their identities as Latins living in America. We were honored to exhibit this beautifully and thoughtfully curated exhibit with such wonderful artists! Thanks for joining us as we look back at some of our favorite exhibits from the past seven years as we prepare to move to our brand new space!

One of our most memorable exhibits from the past seven years was a collaboration between artist Dawn Tree and the Greenwood Cultural Center to bring us the exhibit, Black Wall Street. The dialogue from this exhibit included a talk from the Greenwood Cultural Center’s Mechelle Brown. The exhibit was eye opening for many and was a rich, challenging, and important conversation for our community in 2018. For many of us, it was the first time we heard the story of the massacr...e in Greenwood, a wealthy black suburb of Tulsa, in 1921. An all too familiar story sparked the event: a black boy supposedly upset a white girl, who screamed, and it led to a devastating lynch mob that went as far as firebombing this thriving community from the air. Martial law was declared and even the National Guard was called into Greenwood against citizens who were defending their own property. Ultimately, many lives were lost, hundreds were injured seriously, 1.5 million dollars of real estate and $750,000 of private property were destroyed, and there was no justice. What was truly incredible about the exhibit was hearing about the hope and resilience of a community that rebuilt itself through sheer determination and will. Many of us in the room never learned about this event in school, and we were very grateful to Dawn and the GCC for generously collaborating in our space to bring us this history through art. @greenwoodculturalcenter @undergroundtree See more
