The Dead Bug exercise is a favorite among F.I.T. providers, even if it might have an off putting name. That's because it is a great way to build core strength and stabilization while protecting the spine and low back. Challenging the body with low back stabilization in contralateral movement patterns prepares the body for everyday activities as well as potentially decreasing low back pain. To do this lay on your back, lifting your arms straight up in the air and your legs... up bent at a 90 degree angle. In a slow and controlled movement slowly drop your heel to the ground at the same time dropping the opposite hand to the ground. During this movement make sure your low back stays flat to the ground by engaging your core to create the low back stabilization. Mid phase: At this point in the rehabilitation process, you will have increased shoulder range of motion and will begin actively moving your shoulder through those motions. It took a lot of joint mobilizations, passive shoulder stretching by your doctor, hard work and patience to get to this point! Once you have gained full range of motion and successfully performed exercises without resistance, we can begin loading the RTC with weight. Check out the video below demonstrating... sidelying shoulder external rotation with weight, which focuses on strengthening and stabilizing the shoulder joint. Late phase: The final point is where we focus on functional movements and sport specific exercise. At this stage, you have gained full range of motion, pushed through simpler strengthening and stability exercise and are ready for more complicated, overhead movements. The exercise below is called a landmine press. This challenges the shoulder in overhead position which can transfer to overhead sports. Having Rotator Cuff (RTC) surgery in the near future? Received a diagnosis of a RTC tear or other pathology involving your RTC? Do not fear, our F.I.T. doctors are well versed in treating these types of post-op and injuries. Here's what to expect during the early, mid, and late phases of rehabbing this type of injury. Early phase: After a RTC repair, most likely you will be placed in an immobilizer for a few weeks to help protect the integrity of the surgery. Once cleared by ...your physician to start physical therapy, the early phases will include pain relief with modalities, soft tissue work to decrease sensitivity and joint mobilizations to help increase range of motion. Below is a common shoulder mobilization that is utilized by our doctors to help mobilize the joint and in turn, increase ROM. Back pain, neck pain, or just want to have better spinal mobility? . The cat/cow exercise could help you with that! .... The cat/cow (cat/camel, etc.) is a great exercise for overall spinal joint mobility and activating/relaxing your spinal muscles. . The goal of this exercise is to start with your head and bend it up towards the ceiling, drop your chest and abdomen towards the floor, and point your tailbone at the ceiling. Then you reverse each one of these moves by curling your head down to your chest, push your upper and lower back to the ceiling, and pull your hips underneath your body . . Throughout this exercise you will feel muscles both tense up and relax and this is normal! As your motion improves you may have some discomfort with the new motion, and that is also expected! .
