Today is Epiphany, the twelfth day of the Christmas season, and the day the church celebrates the arrival of the Magi in Bethlehem. Just a few hundred years ago, this day was a big deal. Christians looked forward to their Twelfth Night celebrations more than they did Christmas Day. It was on Epiphany that presents were exchanged and the biggest feast of the Christmas season was held. Unfortunately, Epiphany Day and the season of Epiphany has lost its importance. Epiphany is i...mportant. It is during Epiphany that Jesus is revealed beyond the confines of Judaism. Epiphany Day marks the day that the Gentile world was able to see God incarnate, come to this earth to save all the nations. During the season of Epiphany is the Baptism of the Lord Sunday, when we remember Jesus' baptism. We remember how the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descended from heaven and rested on Jesus, and how a voice from heaven proclaimed, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." And in some years, it is during the season of Epiphany that we witness Jesus' first miracle -- turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. Epiphany allows us to witness the divinity of Jesus so that we may trust in God's plan of salvation.
