Juneteenth is a powerful reminder that there are always two aspects to the law. The first is the actual text of the laws themselves. It's easy to understand why passing equitable and just laws is critical to having an equitable and just society. But the slaves in Texas who first celebrated Juneteenth did so two years after they were supposedly "freed". The "law" was not applied equitably and justice was again delayed for them. Equity and justice depend not only on passing equ...itable and just laws, but on applying them in equitable and just ways. So many post-Reconstruction and Jim Crow laws depended on inequitable and unjust application of laws that even laws that were "non-discriminatory" on their face were used to perpetuate systems of oppression. Let us never stop fighting for equity in justice; not just in writing laws, but in enforcing and applying laws as well.
