In order for reading comprehension to occur, a child must be able to recognize a word AND process the language being used. Word recognition includes: *decodin...g *phonological awareness *sight words Language comprehension includes: *vocabulary *literary knowledge *background knowledge *verbal reasoning *text/story structures Jessica says, "A child will struggle to comprehend the text if one of these areas is impacted." This is also an important reason to seek out a speech language pathologist, like Jessica, if you observe your child is having a difficult time with reading. It is MUCH more complex than just reading the words!
