Hi friends! Shorter blog this week (less science, more opinion). What do we do when we feel our hormones are out of control, but labs and imaging are normal? Have a great week!

Here’s an interesting article from the Washington Post. It highlights something I’ve seen frequently since the pandemic started. What about you? Have you experienced this?

This is an interesting read, although the results are not all that mind blowing. We know that disorders with high blood pressure are some of the main causes for placental abruption during pregnancy. The article states that if you have an abruption, you are at an increased risk for heart failure, but not other types of cardiovascular disease. Obviously high blood pressure by itself outside of pregnancy can increase your risk for heart failure, so it’s not too far of a jump. ... Regardless, for those of you that have experienced placental abruptions, make sure your ticker is staying in tiptop shape!

I’ve had a couple of people message me to ask if I do any type of Tele-Health visits. The answer is yes! Obviously there are some limitations to the visits, but for initial consultations, or medication follow ups, we can do a lot via telemedicine. If you’re interested, just let me know!

DIY masks for non-healthcare providers. Just because you can’t wear an N95 mask or other speciality mask, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear a mask at all. The mask I wear at work is different from these DIY masks. Mine has a special filter that helps keep me protected from other people. These do not. These masks keep you from potentially infecting others. This article, and numerous others, have shown that even a couple layers of fabric over your mouth such as a T-shirt..., or folded up paper towels - can decrease the amount of aerosolization that comes out of your mouth and nose. This translates to a potential decrease in viral spread, especially since current numbers show that around half of the people who test positive for coronavirus arerelatively asymptomatic, and therefore may not be quarantining themselves at home. Think of this as a social duty, a choice to help out the members of your community. You wear a mask in public because you want to keep others safe. When other people wear masks in public, they’re doing their part to keep you safe. Give it a thought, and please share

Just in! Of four babies born to mothers who tested positive for Covid-19, none tested positive for the virus, nor did any show signs of the respiratory complications associated with the viral infection. I understand that four isn’t a big number, but this is one of the first published case studies that we have on the effects of viral infection and pregnancy.

Dr. Corey Babb 13.12.2019

Here is the official statement from the CDC about COVID-19 infections in pregnant women. To sum things up, there are not enough cases to make an official statement regarding possible adverse events, or long-term complications, should a woman who is pregnant become infected with COVID-19. As with all infections during pregnancy, it is important to keep in mind that pregnancy is considered a "immunotolerant state," meaning that the body's natural immune functions are often ...suppressed in order to not mount an autoimmune attack against the developing fetus. As such, good hand hygiene, and infection prevention, are paramount to keeping a pregnant woman healthy. Should a pregnant mom test positive for this viral infection, there is not enough information yet to make an official statement about whether or not the fetus will be potentially harmed due to this infection. Finally, new mothers who test positive for COVID-19 have not been shown to pass the virus to their infant. This is based on a very limited number of case series. Basically...wash your hands, disinfect often, and don't panic.
