"Recipe for Success with Ingredients for a Disaster" Good evening! As the title suggests, there is a glaring dichotomy confronting us In these volatile times. We have affected positive change by preventing infections. We have done so by being conscientious of our hygiene, social distancing, as well as staying at home. There is a "flattening of the curve." We must breath a sigh of relief knowing that our actions are having positive outcomes. Regardless of our hospitals running... low on PPE, the increasing incidence of COVID-19, we are actually seeing a slowing in the rate of new infections(I emphasize the rate of growth) in many cities around America, including Kansas City. The caveat being these rates could change as predictive models process more data. Now that you have something to be cautiously optimistic about, lets talk about the down side. No it isn't the rising ICU admissions and Viral pneumonias being admitted in local hospitals. Its something far more intimate and proximal. I am referring to your cabinets, refrigerators, and pantries. We are all staying home because collectively we are a sick society with a sick immune system. We gorge on processed foods and meats, carbohydrate rich drinks and juices, and eat excessively. 95% plus patients that have died of COVID19 are people with chronic illnesses of some sort. We cannot ignore that this is the result of poor nutrition and poor lifestyle. Whether those choices were voluntary or not is not the purpose of this post. Now that we find ourselves secluded in our homes, with infrequent trips to wholesale markets, the choices become even more limited. People will prefer non perishable items, rice and flour amongst the top. Natural foods such as fresh vegetables and fruits move down the list as fresh fish or liver for example will be harder to find. Remember the reason you are quarantined to begin with: to give your immune system the best chance at fighting this novel coronavirus. We cannot fight this pandemic while giving in to our basic urges, we must now more than ever convict ourselves to the healthiest diet and lifestyle. Dr Banday nezhealth.com [email protected]

Good Afternoon! There are treatments for Covid-19 but no vaccines. Prior to advancing lets explore the word 'treatments.' We can consider extracorporeal membrane oxygenation a treatment (therapeutic bypass of the lung so blood can be oxygenated by an ECMO machine) however this is the last treatment we want. I don't want to be a part of confusion and chaos, I am not selling any cure or treatment. I am simply stating facts and providing guidance for patients to navigate this d...Continue reading

Handling Anxiety in Pandemic Times. Good Morning America and fellow citizens of the world! Let us rest at ease, slow down our breathing along with our pulse. Although its thoughtful shapes are unique to each of us, the feeling of anxiety take upon a common biochemical pathway. It is at this time that a social discourse regarding what we may term Hypochondriac related Anxiety is important. To start with, you will make it out of this fine. No I'm not assuaging you for brownie ...points. I am a physician that sees respiratory failure from infections on a daily basis. I manage their conditions in the Intensive Care Unit, out of which some do not make out alive. I am telling you this because an increase in catecholamines on a chronic basis will deplete you of your vitality and hence immunity. Not only a steady surge in adrenaline, a steady inhibition of other hormones that are necessary for your daily vigor such as thyroxine, testosterone, and IGF; all eventually leading to a compromise in our immunity. Too little worry is lassitude and apathy, we have enough common sense to know that the right amount of worry is essential. But there is a Pandemic and all of us are supposed to be monitoring symptoms? Yes as you are, but most of you will not even become symptomatic, and the ones that do then you will recover easily. You are worried that you maybe that small minority of people that will actual need medical help. That is why it is a good time to become confident in your own vigor, your vitality and immunity. Spring is upon us and the sunlight is plentiful. Hydrate your body with pure water, give it an extra glass for the times, exercise your muscles and your lungs especially. Increase your exposure to cold to see how good your lungs and skin are (more on that later) at repelling any invasion. Finally relax and put your mind at ease, spend time with your loved ones, before you know it life will be back to normal and you won't have this cuddle time with them. Be thankful for what you have and involve yourself in your neighborhood if you hadn't before. We are one community suffering one Pandemic, this is a time for unity and compassion. Dr Banday

Good afternoon everyone! Intermittent fasting is becoming more and more popular, and unlike popular trends in our culture this one is actually healthy! There are some general principles that one should know prior to starting. The first one is the overall target of caloric restriction you want to aim at. Many people make the decision initially to target the hours they will fast, yet equally important is to identify the calories you want to restrict yourself per day. ... Most people will not opt for a 24 hour fast or higher, although the benefits of fasting increase significantly the longer you go without calories and commensurately the number of calories. As long as you are hydrated studies on human population shows 40 days of no caloric intake can be tolerated (I am not recommending this :) Most people will opt for fasting for a portion of 1 day, so it is essential for them to identify the calories they will take when they break their fast. To get the most benefit the day of the fast reduce your calories as much as you can, for instance if you can tolerate just 400 cal/day as opposed to 800 cal/day the 400 cal/day is better. If you are a diabetic on insulin and you dont know how to adjust your insulin based on your carbohydrate and certain amino acid intake then you should consult with your Health care provider (HCP). Also if you have had certain gastric bypsass procedures such as BPD, roux n Y and such you should consult your HCP. Yet even in these cases, fasting will help you when you develop the right regimen. It is the month of Ramadan additionally and peer support is easy to obtain if you are interested in fasting. As far as the biologically important pathways that have shown us the benefit of fasting it is the MTOR pathway, the mammalian target of rapamycin. Longevity studies continue to conclude that suppressing MTOR by fasting results in pleotropic effects that include stimulating Sirtuin pathways. All of these are health effects that we want for our bodies!

Good morning everyone! Apart from announcing our grand opening of our flagship clinic, I want to bring attention to an interesting study done regarding health and cooking. We are excited to have our clinic finally up and running. We accept all insurances and if you dont have insurance we provide affordable options. Our aim is for you to never sacrifice your health care because of financial restrictions. The study done in American journal of Clinical Nutrition showed how AGE(a...dvanced glycation end products) in our cooking directly result in oxidative stress and possible endothelial damage. AGE is also called glycotoxin. The study showed that cooking at temperatures of 220 degrees celcius such as frying or high temperature cooking produced high AGE, whereas cooking at 100 degrees celcius such as steaming or boiling produced significantly less AGE. They also tested the patients blood a few hours after every meal and consistently found higher inflammation in those who cooked at higher temperatures resulting in higher AGE. Follow up studies show that dry cooking at high temperatures produces the most AGE. Animal protein and fat are generally richer in AGE. Also that carbohydrate containing foods such as fruits, milk and vegetables generally have lower AGE even after cooking. Some studies have also shown that AGE ia significantly reduced by cooking with moist heat, using shorter cooking times, cooking at lower temperatures, and by use of acidic ingredients such as lemon juice or vinegar. In conclusion, this is a brief introduction into Nutritional chemistry and its effects on our health. They are definitely something we cannot ignore. The question that comes up for me is what is the best way to prepare meat when we do prepare it? www.facebook.com/teacoupclinic

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying time with their family. It is almost customary to overeat during these days . Yet all of you are health conscious to wonder how this may have affected certain risk factors. Especially given atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ascvd) is the number one killer, it is a question to ponder. In particular, increased saturated fats such as butter, animal fats would likely have increased your cholesterol. This doesn't mean that ...if only your sweet tooth had more than its fill, your cholesterol didnt budge. Interestingly increased sugar intake not only increases triglycerides but if paired with insulin resistance will increase your cholesterol as well. Indeed some of you maybe on a statin and are already fast forwarding to your next splurge. Know that current medical literature has made ldl-c an almost obsolete biomarker for potential plaque burden. I know I just blew a lot of bubbles, but I will leave that topic for another day. If you are on a statin though and your ldl-c if quite low, which does offer some protection from ascvd, make sure you ask your doctor to check desmesterol levels. Very low desmesterol levels may put you in a higher risk for dementia. The brain's white matter is essentially all fat. In Ayurveda, ghee is the fundamental food for the brain. This means that keeping your cholesterol(desmesterol) at such a low level may have negative effects on brain health. Especially if you carry the apo e4/e4 allelic combination, there is a higher risk for dementia. I hope to present further knowledge on each of these topics in depth. I encourage you all to keep learning about it as well. Happy Holidays, Dr. Banday
