ARRESTED!!!! On September 24, 2020 at approximately 2200 hours, Sheriff Degase received information that Doyle Wayne Shelton Jr was hiding at a residence in Ozark County in the Theodosia area. At approximately 2300 hours, Sheriff Degase, Deputy Harley, K9 Amigo and Deputy Nelson surrounded the residence with Ozark County Deputies Miller, Hannaford and Bales. Sheriff Degase knocked on the door and a male subject came to the door and when asked he advised Wayne Shelton was in ...fact in the residence. At that time Shelton attempted to exit several doors on the rear of the building but soon found he was surrounded.. Shelton failed to come to the door and surrender after Sheriff Degase yelled into the residence in an attempted to get Shelton to surrender peacefully. After some time, Sheriff Degase and Deputy Seth Miller entered the residence where they located Shelton and took him in to custody without incident. Sheriff Degase credits the Citizens of Douglas, Ozark and Taney Counties for the apprehension of Shelton. Without the phone calls reporting sightings, this arrest would not have happened. Sheriff Degase would like to thank Taney County Deputies and Deputy Carl Pride for chasing down sightings of Shelton in the Protem area on September 23 it obviously wore out Shelton because when taken into custody Shelton stated he was tired and worn out. Sheriff Degase would also like to thank the Ozark County Deputies who assisted in taking Shelton into custody tonight.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is actively looking for Doyle Wayne Shelton Jr., age 46, of Ava. Over the last week Shelton has been seen trespassing on people’s property. Shelton walked into a residence in the Rome area where a female was present and assaulted her. A warrant for Shelton’s arrest has been issued for Burglary and 4th degree Assault. Shelton has a history of this criminal conduct and was arrested in November of 2017 by Sheriff Degase after he went into an... occupied residence and locked himself in their bathroom and began going through their medicine cabinet. On this 2017 case Shelton was sentenced to 12 years in the Department of corrections which was suspended upon completion of long-term treatment in Department of Corrections; however, he is already out and he is currently on supervised probation. There was a report of an incident in Wright County over the weekend where Shelton and another unknown male attempted to break into a house, but it was deterred when the homeowners came home and armed themselves. If seen do not attempt to apprehend Shelton. Call your local law enforcement immediately. Due to Shelton’s state of mind he should be considered dangerous. Shelton was last seen driving green Mercury Cougar with a busted front windshield. See more

On September 5, 2020, Deputy Nelson attempted to stop a vehicle on West 14 Highway near Z Highway. The vehicle was engaged in a short pursuit before the driver abandoned the vehicle on CR 552 where the driver fled on foot. Deputy Jonathan Harley and K9 Amigo responded to the area to assist Deputy Nelson. Deputy Nelson, Deputy Harley, and K-9 Amigo tracked the subject for approximately 2 hours before locating him hiding in a tree. The subject, who attempted to evade Deputy Ne...lson both in vehicle and on foot, was identified as Steven Bennett of Seymour. Bennett initially refused to come down from the tree, and after some negotiating with Sheriff Degase, Bennett chose to come down from the tree on his own rather than Sheriff Degase climbing the tree and assisting him down. It is believed that Bennett fled because he had a felony warrant out of Wright County for his arrest. Sheriff Degase commends Deputy Harley and K-9 Amigo for this long track in hot weather. The addition of K-9 Amigo was made possible by the Citizens of Douglas County through gracious donations. This was Amigo's first track and apprehension of a fleeing felon using skills that were learned at training afforded to Amigo by community donations. Since the subject was in a tree and surrendered peacefully, Amigo's bite apprehension was not utilized in this man hunt. See more
