I would say my passion for health and nutrition started when I was in high school playing sports. I quickly found that changing my diet and eating foods to fuel my performance made such a huge difference. This passion has definitely grown over the last 3 years throughout my undergrad. It was during my very first undergrad nutrition course that I knew that I had chosen the right career path. For the first time I actually LOVED a class and constantly wanted to learn more about... each topic. I always find myself wanting to talk about nutrition and wanting to help others be healthier too. I’m thankful to have found my passion and absolutely can’t wait to see where this field takes me! My current dream job is having my own Private Practice. This literally has changed like 3 times in the last three months though. Haha! The best part of SLU’s nutrition program is probably how organized the program is. I THRIVE in environments that are organized and I truly believe that it has helped me to be less stressed this year than anticipated. Also I appreciate our professors and director so much, because they do so much to make sure we are successful. Julia Shoemaker, Dietetic Intern, MS/DI Program #humansofslunutrition #OneSLU #DCHSlife

I want to help infants and children manage and improve their medical conditions through nutrition interventions. My dream job is to work as a pediatric clinical dietitian. A main reason I applied to SLU was for the specialized program they offer in pediatrics. There are so many reasons, but I was initially drawn to the field because nutrition is something that affects everyone. I enjoy educating others with hopes that together we can significantly improve their quality of li...fe. There are a lot of aspects of the program that I love, but the professors in the SLU Masters/Dietetic Internship program particularly stand out to me. Every professor genuinely wants their students succeed and helps students find opportunities that fit their interests. My family has always been involved with food. The land that I grew up on has been passed down through generations, and when I was little, my nana and papa would make everything from scratch. Like their own spaghetti sauce from the garden. Having grown up this way, I see the value in to helping people and teaching them how to be healthy through food. I dream of opening my own cafe and having a non-for-profit running out of it. I envision the cafe having a community garden att...ached to teach kids how to grow their own food. I love that the my program offers so many opportunities to experience nutrition. My favorite aspect is being in the culinary program and working at Fresh Gatherings. It is hands-on through cooking. This goes hand-in-hand with nutrition because you can teach someone how to change, but they won’t know how to actively do it without practicing the skills. Sydney Rury, B.S.
