Heat Stroke - Overwork Is Not The Only Culprit We often connect overheating to excessive physical exertion on hot, humid days. While this is correct, other les...s apparent culprits are lurking. 1. Poor Barn Air Circulation: A horse standing in a stall can suffer heatstroke if the barn is not well ventilated, and the air is stagnant. Make sure the barn has ample airflow. Open doors, windows, and install fans. 2. Prolonged Exposure To Direct Sunlight: A horse who has no access to shade on an excessively hot and humid day can suffer heatstroke. If turn-out areas lack protection from the sun, consider turning out at night, early morning, or early evening when temperatures are lower. 3. Hauling: Long hauls on hot days can be dangerous. Ideally, temperatures should not be above 90 when hauling. If you must travel, regularly stop to assess horses for heat stroke: excessive sweating or not sweating at all (very serious), increase in respiration(panting), a large amount of saliva production.
