On June 11, NKC Schools held a space for Community Circles centered on race and racism. More than 200 members of the community we serve arrived at Eastgate and Gateway Sixth Grade Centers to engage in honest discussion about the things we must challenge in ourselves and the world around us; what should be learned and unlearned. One question asked was how NKC Schools could improve its support of efforts to end racism in our schools. In direct response to feedback from that eve...ning, here are some actions we have taken since June: - Aligned equity and inclusion efforts to now include district and building leaders, all staff, students, and the community. - Began analyzing district committees to ensure diverse representation that enriches the perspective of the overall group. - Drafted a board policy for consideration that ensures equity and inclusion is woven into our schools at a system level. - Redesigned curriculum to include the histories of all people, social justice, and understanding of systems and how they work for or against people. - Began developing measures of accountability for all equity and inclusion work. This is just the beginning. Those in attendance at our first Community Conversation requested more opportunities to learn together. As a result, our next event is August 27, from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Eastgate and Gateway. Sessions will be capped to ensure social distancing and participants must wear masks on site. The topic is safety as we navigate COVID-19, racism in America, and the need to take care of ourselves. You are invited to sign up here: https://forms.gle/NBkgJikd6uksGwcD6 We look forward to a continued partnership with you, learning together and creating spaces to hear from you. NKC Schools is committed to making our district a place where students can bring their full selves and thrive. See more
