We will look further into the complex issues that are involved in #DisabledAbuse - but the issue that I want to focus on here is the threat of #homelessness. .... In this post, I’m not referring to the possibility or danger of homelessness in the general sense - though those with disabilities are indeed at a MUCH higher risk of having unstable housing. . Rather, I’m speaking in terms of the usage of homelessness as an actual, *weaponized* THREAT. This can be explicit or implicit, and is made by a family member, spouse, or other person that is the gatekeeper to housing, in order to keep a #disabled person in line. It can be something that doesn’t even happen, but is just a repeated reminder that the perpetrator won’t let you forget. This is both #FinancialAbuse & #EmotionalAbuse, and it crosses into other areas of abuse, as well. . Many that have been victims of #DomesticViolence and/or #NarcissisticAbuse will be familiar with this type of tactic. It is often a burden that the victim is forced to bear alone, due to the very nature of the threats themselves. . Meanwhile, the perpetrator is counting on things like #JobDiscrimination, low/no income, lengthy waits for #SSDI or #SSI (and their low amounts, when awarded) to allow them to continue to terrorize their target. . Please know that this is not okay, and that you are not alone. . I ask that you share (**not tag!**) this page with anyone that might be affected by this type of situation, & with the #DisabledCommunity at large. Many keep these feelings under wraps, out of fear. And keep in mind that the same person that seems to have the SUPER caring spouse or parent may be facing a VERY different reality behind closed doors. . If you are in a dangerous situation, please contact your local #DV shelter, & see if they can accommodate your needs. If not, find out why, & if there is a way to address this. . I’d eventually like to have a #Zoom or conference call to discuss this issue. DM or email me if interested. . . . #DisabledRights #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityAdvocate #DisabledCorps See more
