Amy Sherald's first individual show was two years ago at Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. It included "The Bathers," which just sold at auction in a bidding war that stunned onlookers.
Within her lush gardenscapes, the artist Ebony G. Patterson includes "memento mori", or, symbols of transformation and regenerationitems that evolve and bear witness to the cycle of life and death: butterflies, peacocks, snakes, blossoms. In this artwork, when the land is in plumage, the bird shedding its feathers is a crucial step toward its renewaljust as snakes shed their skin to allow further growth and remove old attachments. Patterson explores the idea that we ...come from the earth, we exist on the earth, and we return to the earth. As such, the garden is a site of life, death, and mourning. Come see Ebony G. Patterson: ....when the cuts erupt...the garden rings...and the warning is a wailing... at the museum this weekend! We're open 10:00 am5:00 pm, today and tomorrow. _____ #EbonyGPatterson, when the land is in plumage..., installation view, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, September 11, 2020February 21, 2021. Whether you voted early, by mail, or in-person today, you deserve your "I Voted" sticker. Last week, New York Magazine revealed 48 artist-designed voter stickers to be distributed for free at book stores and select retail across the country. Luckily for St. Louis, you can find a sticker included in curbside orders at Left Bank Books while supplies last! Artist Amy Sherald shares the inspiration behind her sticker, which features a painting from her 2018 exhibition at CA...M: "Growing up in the South, I viewed the American flag as belonging to a people whose patriotism was solely reserved for whites. This idea of Americanness left me ambivalent about where I stood. The Obama Presidency encouraged and inspired me to reconsider that notion. As I reflect on the many generations that came before me, I would be derelict if I did not take ownership of the one thing that they died for. I want to acknowledge their undeniable and indispensable presence in our history and in the making of this great country. This painting is about that reclamation. My American flag represents a whole country. A flag that conjures hope, empathy, resilience, unity, freedom, and justice. It does not disregard our past sins but stands at attention to America’s original sin and in doing so, forges a path forward to a more perfect union." _____ [1]: Courtesy New York Magazine and @asherald.
