WHY DANCE? This is the question I've been asking young dancers a lot lately. I feel we as dance educators can do more to help students find the answers. For me,... dance is a calling and is where the spiritual and physical connect. I have no other choice. Are dance programs only a gateway to applause, accolades, or capitalism? These seem to be the main avenues by which dance programs validate themselves by. If we're only thinking about performance and the confines of a stage then we've missed the mark. Dance is transcendence, but I feel bound to the tasks of increasing enrollment and performance opportunities so dancers can "feel good." Are we teaching our students to dance when there is no job, no one watching, applause, or stage? I teach dance as a means of providing students with the ability to find and connect to their authentic selves. It's not a concept young dancers want to investigate but I see the future. See more
