Welcome to championship Sunday!
On October 5, 1972 Grant Hill was born in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia and being named Virginia Mr. Basket...ball, Hill played basketball at Duke University from 1990 to 1994. He helped lead the Blue Devils to national titles in 1991 and 1992. Despite losing 2 of the biggest contributors on the Blue Devils, Christian Laettner (in 1992) and Bobby Hurley, Hill led Duke to the championship game once again in 1994, but lost to Arkansas Razorbacks. Hill won the Henry Iba Corinthian Award as the nation's top defensive player in 1993, and in 1994 he was the ACC Player of the Year. During his collegiate career at Duke, Hill became the first player in ACC history to collect more than 1,900 points, 700 rebounds, 400 assists, 200 steals, and 100 blocked shots. As a result of his successful college career, he became the 8th player in Duke history to have his jersey number (33) retired. Hill was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the 3rd pick in the NBA draft after graduating from Duke in 1994. In his first season, he averaged 19.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.7 steals per game, and became the first Pistons rookie since Isiah Thomas in 198182 to score 1,000 points. Hill ended up sharing NBA Rookie of the Year Award honors with Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks, becoming the first Pistons player since Dave Bing in 196667 to win the award. Early in his NBA career, Hill was widely considered to be one of the best all-around players in the game, often leading his team in points, rebounds and assists. In his first 6 seasons in the NBA, Hill averaged 21.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game and made the Eastern Conference All-Star Team 5 times. However, the trajectory of his career was altered by a 2000 ankle injury. The injury continued to plague him for several years, led to a March 2003 surgery that was followed by life-threatening complications, and forced him to miss the entire 200304 season. In 2005, Hill made the Eastern Conference All-Star Team as a member of the Orlando Magic. He played in the Western Conference Finals in 2010 during his tenure with the Phoenix Suns. In the 12 seasons following his ankle injury, Hill averaged 13.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. On June 1, 2013, Hill announced his retirement from the NBA after playing for the L.A. Clippers. He is a 7-time NBA All-Star, a 5-time All-NBA selection, and a 3-time winner of the NBA Sportsmanship Award. In 2018, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Over his career he tallied 17,137 points (16.7 ppg), 6,169 rebounds (6 rpg) and 4,252 assists (4.1 apg). Hill was also inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. Tributes to the late John Thompson continue to pour in from the college basketball coaching community.
Legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr., has died at age 78. He is a member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2006. At Providence College in Rhode Island, John Thompson led the freshman team to a record of 20 wins and 2 losses and averaged over 32 points per game. In 1964, Providence appeared in the NCAA tournament and he was named the New England College Player of the Year. During the late 60's and early 70's, Thompson coached at St. Anthony's..., a small Catholic school in northeast Washington. From St. Anthony's he sent a dozen scholarship players to the collegiate ranks. In 1972 Thompson began coaching at Georgetown University. He led the Hoyas to 24 straight post-season appearances, three NCAA Final Fours and the National Championship in 1984. Thompson has been named National Coach of the Year three times and Big East Coach of the Year three times. See more
