In a time of financial uncertainty and concern for many, we are especially proud to announce that we have resolved a class action case that provides over $1,500,000.00 in relief to Missouri consumers. Last week, a St. Louis County Court approved a settlement of a class action case our firm filed against a local loan company. The lawsuit we filed alleged the loan company improperly obtained judgments against over 100 consumers in Missouri courts without first having properly s...erved the lawsuit papers. The settlement resulted in the loan company eliminating a total of over $1,500,000.00 of debt for more than 100 Missouri consumers. The settlement also provides over $200,000 in cash payments to the consumers. In addition, the consumers who had judgments entered against them will have those judgments removed. Of course, the case was only as good as our clients. We were fortunate to have outstanding clients who had the courage to stand up for themselves and over 100 other Missouri consumers. No more than 2.5% of attorneys located in Missouri are named to the Rising Star list. The cases resolved by Butsch Roberts & Associates LLC in 2019 resulted in over $700,000 in debt being eliminated for Missouri consumers AND close to $2 million in payments to Missouri consumers. Every so often we get a compelling reminder about the importance of representing consumers. A reminder about the importance of being a champion for the underdog. I received that reminder this morning. I was standing in court waiting for a judge to sign an order. A group of attorneys stood behind me. The attorneys began talking about their holiday traditions. ... One of the lawyers handles landlord-tenant cases. These cases often result in a tenant being evicted from their home. The lawyer proudly said, "This year will mark the 35th year that I will evict somebody from their home on Christmas." He continued, "the tradition began when someone told me that I would not be cold enough to evict someone from their home on Christmas." That is cold. As disturbing as this comment was to hear, especially from another member of the Bar, it reminded me of the importance of our work. It caused me to reflect on the work we have done for consumers this last year. In the last year alone, the cases we brought have resulted in over $700,000 in debt being eliminated for Missouri consumers AND close to $2 million in payments to Missouri consumers. That is rewarding. While I truly believe the lawyer's comments do not reflect the values of the Bar or even the overwhelming percentage of lawyers who handle landlord-tenant cases and other collection cases, this experience provided me with an important reminder that our work can and does have a positive impact on those who need it the most. We are proud to announce that we have resolved a class action lawsuit against a debt collection company, resulting in the company erasing a total of approximately $300,000.00 of debt for over 160 Missouri consumers. Our lawsuit alleged that the debt collection company improperly obtained judgments against over 160 consumers in Missouri courts without first having properly served the lawsuit papers. As part of the settlement, the debt collection company not only agreed to ret...urn all the money it collected from the consumers after the judgments were entered, the collection company also agreed to remove all of the judgments entered against the consumers and to erase the debts. Of course, the case is only as good as the client. We were fortunate to have an outstanding client who had the courage to stand up for herself and over 160 other Missouri consumers.

We are honored to announce that in early September we obtained a $224,000 verdict against a local payday/installment loan company for improperly garnishing our client's wages. The jury rendered a unanimous verdict for $74,000 in actual damages and $150,000 in punitive damages. This is the type of case that makes you proud to be a lawyer. The company filed a collection lawsuit against our client to collect a $1,000.00 loan with an interest rate of 185%. Yes, you read that cor...rectly, 185% interest. Without ever serving our client with the lawsuit, the company took a judgment against our client and garnished her wages for close to three years. The company garnished closed to $6,000.00 of our client's wages (over a $1,000 loan) and claimed she still owed over $2,000.00. There was no end in sight. We were able to get the garnishment removed, the garnished money returned, the judgment set aside AND obtained a verdict for our client in the amount of $224,000 against the company. We are proud of our client for having the courage to stand up for what is right. She stood up for what was right and the tables have now turned.
