Feb. 5, 2021 For immediate release Winter takes a bitter turn Frigid temperatures could affect travel in Missouri... JEFFERSON CITY The Missouri Department of Transportation is advising motorists to know before you go as bitter cold temperatures combined with snow and wind gusts up to 25 mph will affect travel from Saturday morning into the evening. According to the National Weather Service, periods of snow on Saturday will give way to frigid temperatures Saturday night. Sunday’s temperatures are expected to be in the single digits for most of the state with the possibility of below-zero wind chills. Cleanup, particularly during overnight hours, could take longer than usual after the snow ends because the chemicals used to treat the roads lose their effectiveness in bitterly cold temperatures, said Becky Allmeroth, MoDOT’s chief safety and operations officer. With sub-freezing temperatures expected through much of next week, any thawing that occurs will likely refreeze overnight, causing slippery road conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses. If you need to travel, make sure you have a full tank of gas, blankets, gloves and provisions like water and snacks in the event of an emergency. Make sure your cellphone is fully charged, but never use it while driving. If you should slide off the road, or are involved in a crash, stay inside your vehicle with your seat belt buckled until help arrives. If you encounter a snowplow or salt trucks on the road, always give them room to work. Do not tailgate or try to pass. Remember that a snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they may not see you. Know before you go by checking Missouri road conditions at www.modot.org or through MoDOT’s smartphone app, available for iPhone and Android phones. The USPS raised post card postage on January 24 so the bills were mailed early this month to save on postage. They also made it to Harrisonville and back over the weekend which unfortunately has to be done now. That is the reason they were so early. They are still due by the 10th. They will be mailed out the regular time from this point forward and hopefully the mail will continue to arrive in a timely matter.

They had a hard decision to make and they wished that some more of the decorated houses were in the judging but nevertheless they appreciated being a part of it. All of the judges have been around. The winners of the Christmas decorations will be announced Monday. For those of you who did not enter the contest but still want to be on our map please send in your address (inside and outside city limits) so we can get them on the map!! We will be having our 2nd Annual Christmas Light contest this year! Judging will be held on Friday November 27th and you must be signed up at City Hall by Monday, November 23rd. We will also be putting out a map for the public this year (as requested) if we have enough contestants. Keep in mind that the Parade will also be a night parade so everyone who comes will get to see your decorating skills!
