The temperatures have reached extreme lows this past week and now area energy companies are turning off electricity for short amounts of time to conserve energy.... Evergy, which provides electricity to many locations throughout Atchison County, announced Monday that intermittent power outages would take place. Late Monday afternoon, an Evergy media contact spoke with an Atchison County Mail representative and explained at this time, no more power outages were scheduled to take place. However, that does not mean that more won’t occur later on this week if deemed necessary. So, as of now, customers are just advised to continue to conserve energy to help reduce stress on the power grid, potentially reducing the ongoing need for emergency reductions. Turn thermostats a little cooler (65-68 degrees). Avoid the use of electric space heaters. Close blinds and shades to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows. Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances. When possible, delay non-essential uses of energy washing drying clothes, washing dishes and bathing to non-peak hours, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Use low-temperature cooking methods and avoid opening the oven door if it’s on. EXTREME WEATHER ALERT FROM YOUR COOPERATIVE: Due to extreme and extended cold temperatures, our cooperative system and many utilities throughout the region cont...inue to exceed all-time electricity demand. We are urging members to reduce their impact on the grid by reducing electricity use as much as possible. High power consumption levels across the grid have the potential to cause intermittent service disruptions. Taking steps to decrease your power usage at this time will help while we navigate this extreme weather event. Tips to help reduce power usage: Extreme temperatures and the longer run times on HVAC units will mean higher utility bills. Turn down your thermostat a few degrees and use a blanket or warm clothing to help conserve and stay warm. Limit the use of larger appliances such as laundry or dishwashers. Use smaller kitchen appliances like toaster ovens, microwaves and slow cookers to make meals, rather than relying on your range or oven. Be sure to turn off and unplug space heaters that you don't need to use. Be mindful of the amount of time you utilize a space heater and reduce, if possible. Keep fireplace dampers closed when not in use. Unplug/turn off unused electronics, chargers, and lights. Again, we appreciate your current and future efforts to serve members as we all manage through this historic week. See more
