Aftercare alchemy! Today we made our own charcoal pencils for drawing. We selected our sticks, wrapped them in several layers of foil and made small slits in the top, and then set them directly in the fire. The slits allow the natural compounds in the wood to "boil" off without letting enough oxygen into the packet to set the sticks on fire. After about 45 minutes, we removed the packets and let them cool. We were amazed at how different our sticks now looked! Then we had fun making our own charcoal drawings.
Our middle schoolers made and decorated this beautiful massive wreath!

From our amazing aftercare teacher! We stayed warm at aftercare today by making pine needle tea on the campfire! We learned how to differentiate between types of evergreens, and the kids used this information to find a pine tree amongst the many, many cedars. Then we used a field guide to compare the needles and pine cones of the tree to narrow it down to Eastern White Pine. Pine needles also contain loads of immune boosting vitamin C, making it especially great to drink this time of year!
We have 3 openings in our second grade class. We meet 5 days a week, completely outdoors! Email [email protected] to set up a tour!
